175 MK\'s...1-10" or 1-12"?

This is for a 308 bolt gun with a Lothar Walther barrel that will be shot in Tactical Matches up to 1000yds. I want it to shoot the 175's, don't care about the 168's. Which would I be better off with? What muzzle velocity would I need to stay transonic at 1K?

Thanks, Keith

Marine sniping rifles in .308 are twisted 1-12. Marines shot them out to 1000 yards with the 175grSMK.

S1, could you elaborate on the weather conditions where 1-12 will not work, and exactly what effect these weather conditions have on the bullet/accuracy. I do not ask out of disbelief, but it surprises me that the military would use 1-12 if 1-10 would have advantages in variable weather conditions.

Thanks, MM

Thanks for the feedback S1.

I always prefered a 1-10 in my .308 bore rifles for versatility in bullet weights on the heavy end. I shoot 190 gr SMKs in my 1-10 twist 30-06. Work well. I've tried them in my 1-12 .308, to 200 yards. OK at that distance, but haven't shot them at long range.

M-40 A3'S are 1-12" Schneider barrel's. 1.200" x 3" st. taper to .890 at 27" they cut at 24" from front of recoil lug or almost 25" tradional measurement at .920 dia.

Montana Marine,

Are you sure on the Marine sniper M40a3's being a 1-12? I work at Quantico and thought the gunner in charge at Wpns trng Bn who builds all the M40s for the USMC told me that they are 1-11. I know for a fact the Army M24s are 1-11. I would be very surprised if they were still 1-12s.

I have a used br barrel on my deer rifle cut at 21". It has a 14 twist, I use 150 nosler ballistic tips with great accuracy, the 165's shot well also, very well actually. I live and hunt in Fl, am I ever likely to see conditions where my slow 14 twist will not stabilze my bullets of choice? 308
