I have two .280 Rems that are very respectable shooters with H4831sc, 140 gr Accubonds at 3040 fps. with 26" barrels. I decided to give 160 gr. Accubonds a try last weekend. Worked up to 58 gr. of IMR 7828ssc, WLR primers, Nosler brass. 20 thousandths off the lands. Brass, primers and depth the same as my sub 1/2" 140 loads. At 100 yds, the 160s grouped pretty close to where the 140 loads are set. After getting good chrono readings and an E.S. of 5, I shot some 5-shot groups with both rifles (both Browning X-Bolt SHOT specials).
These are the first loads I have tried with Redding S full length dies, then neck sizing to .003 neck tension with the Lee collet die. I always had an E.S of low 20s with standard full length sizing and an expander ball, so was in hopes of getting my ES down. I am very happy with an ES of 5. I did not mess with the scope dials, so the groups are where the scopes were set for the 140s. This load will hopefully give me another 100 yds for elk and 200 yds for deer over the 140s... once I stretch the legs to confirm. So far, I am pleased. Groups were shot with a 12-15 mph 90 degree side wind. Not as great as some of you paper punchers, but an acceptable hunting accuracy IMO.

I'm also using IMR 7828 in my .280 for the 162 amax. 57 gr. gives me a bit over 2800 fps and shoots .1-.2" at 100. SD runs around 5-6 fps on 5 shot groups.

I didn't see your velocity with the 160 AB ????

  1. Forgot that. It was the little bit disappointing part of the equation. I achieved 2925 fps. I was hoping for 3010 fps like I have read that others have gotten with 58 gr of 7828 (with shorter barrels). I didn't go any higher on the powder load, but also didn't have pressure signs so who knows. I have read one guy said he loads to 58.5, but most stopped at 58, so that is where I stopped. Many are using WW brass and I was using Nosler... which I have read can tolerate a bit more powder than WW due to internal dimensions, but I have never compared it to Winchester brass.

Nice it groups so closely to the 140's, not bad groups for windy conditions also. I'm an accubond junkie and love them so far in every caliber that I've used. Little more wallop for sure! Dave

The 280 is my baby.I use 57 grains of Imr 4350 with 145 Speer BT .I could never get a 160 to shoot anywhere as good as the 145
