156 berger in 8" twist 6.5 stability

I'm looking to put a 6.5 prc barrel on my savage and plan to shoot the 156 berger for big game purposes but alot of the barrel company's that i was interested in don't make lower than 8" twist, and berger states the 156 is marginally stabil in a 8" has anyone had really good results or really bad with a 8" twist

Lots of people running 8 twist with good results

I have a 26" 8 twist proof that shoots them great with both h1000 and RL26. Groups are at 500 yds.

What's your elevation? They shoot great in my 7.5 twist. I went 7.5 just because I live and hunt at basically sea level. 8 would probably be fine though.

If I had a choice I would go with 7.5 but I have both 7.5 and 8 in PRCs and can't see any difference at 3000 ft; use the same BC for load development with good predictability out to 1200 yards (I test all loads I work up at 300, 700, 1000 and 1200 yards and the 156 has always held reasonably true to the advertised BC). All my 6.5 CMs are 8 twist and do well with the 156s. Only good experience with the 156 in 8 twist barrels at 3000 ft.

You need to read the whole page surrounding the calculator. When your stability factor is slightly below the 1.5 value, your bullet is not unstable, it simply loses a little BC. You can use the slightly lesser value in your calculations.

I use a 1:7.5" in my barrels.

It's a custom savage 110, I live in 1450 alt but plan on using in higher alt elk nd mule hunts...hard to argue with those results chetraguse!

So ur saying that it should be fine, but am I doing the bullet nd me a disservice by not shooting it out of a 7.5, then again if everyone's having good luck with it in 8s....just need it to hit a 6-8" zone at 800 yards consistently

I'm currently shooting around 1000' elevation. Very easy bullet to tune and not at pressure with either of those loads.

I tried doing exactly what you are wanting to try last fall. BC inconsistentcy made me severely limit my range when atmospheric conditions were changing. Accurately predicting first round hits wasn't precise enough for me to shoot at an animal past around 500 yards. I would have likely only wounded or missed anything beyond that if I had tried. If I lived at higher elevation I may not have seen such variations.

We're you using the 156? That's kinda my worry not being able to take long shots due to inconsistency...Im tring to stay under 350 400 bucks for a prefit barrel and some of the barrel company's that fit that price range didn't make a 7.5 twist(shilen, er shaw, ragged holes, Columbia river) now it looks like McGowen makes it in 7.5" anyone using one of theirs?
