For any cartridge I personally prefer to go to the higher BC and SD bullets. For the 06 that would be 165 or 180 grain bullets. The 270 with 140 grain bullets at 3000-2900 fps is flatter and as hard hitting as the 06 with 150 grains. They all work on deer, just prefer more SD and BC. BTW higher MV is not my go to goal, anything from 264cal on up that gets you higher BC and SD is my go to.

I used to. then I found the absolute best load for the 30-06 for White Tails and Muleys was a 125 grain Nosler ballistic tip at about 3400 FPS. I also tried and liked the 100 grain 30 caliber out of the 30-06 too. The 100 grain slugs were very acceptable under 400 yards.
then I graduated to my very own gun for hunting. previous to that I was using my father's old Ruger 77 in 30-06. that was after he filled his tag then I got to hunt with it. then I got my own rifle.. a much maligned, dusty, old, 270 Winchester: Mod 70. Mid-1980's vintage that I bought NIB in 1988. yea, the gun had been sitting in a gunshop in Auburn, CA for a little over 5 years. the owner of the shop could not give the gun away in the years he had it. However he did make me a smoking hot deal on the gun and 10 boxes of winchester and federal ammo he could not give away either. I often wonder what happened to that rifle after 1993. it was stolen in a home invasion robbery at my home. the insurance company only gave me enough to buy 1/4 of the rifle back. I hope whomever stole my model 70 is rotting in hell for it.
I like the 30-06, I really love the 270 winchester. the only 30-06 I own anymore is my M-1 Garand. I gifted my father's 30-06 to my little brother in Wisconsin.
Hornady SST's are great, I used them in my 300 win mag, 30-06 garand, and in several friend's 30 caliber hunting rifles.

My goto bullet come dear season is the 150 grain SST. Here in eastern NC the shots are too close to get it going super fast.
In Hunter Class benchrest we used to say if a 308 would not shoot with 168 grain McCrackens and 40 grains of either 4895 then sell or rebarrel. We had never even heard of nodes back then but I suspect that was one.
Have you ever studies sectional density and downrange performance?

Just a touch over 3000 fps with rl16 and 150 barnes tsx
When I exclusively used my '06 I loaded 165 Nosler Partitions over 47.2gr IMR3031. Back then I didn't have a Chronograph, but I later discovered that it was chugging along at around 2750fps and it gave me MOA groups at 200yds and accounted for lots of game. Never used or tried any 150's in it. There was never a need to. I've since substituted a 165gr Nosler ABLR and achieved sub MOA groups at 200yds, with a 3 click adjustment in elevation and 4 clicks windage, and it kills em just as good.
In Remington cases, 9 1/2 primer, IMR 4350/59gr/any 150
In WW cases, BR2 primer, IMR 4350/58gr any 165
In Remington cases, BR2 primer, IMR 4350/ 57 for 180s, 54 for 200gr Sierra. Sure I used other powders, but for decades these loads shot in any 30-06 I owned. On SE Texas deer I loaded the 150 Hornady sp for friend's '06s, I went to the Sierra 165 GK to save meat...they are small deer. I've shot alot of 150 SSTs, but never killed any game with them, they are a beautifully slick bullet though! Have a ball Pard!

I don't load for my 30-06 but do shoot Federal 150 gr SP's in it and have been since the late 70's or early 80's. It's an absolute hammer on deer. I haven't shot the rifle much in the last 10 or so years after having shoulder surgery and started shooting a 260.
I've had terrific accuracy from those Federal (Blue Box) 150s, even in an old Garand ( had the adjustable gas plug). For years, they would be the rounds I used for sight-in and barrel break in. Never hunted with them though, always wanted to try something different, ha.

I was shooting 150 grain Hornady SSTs over 52.8 grains of Accurate 4064 getting 2940 FPS from a 22" barrel Tikka T3x and was getting sub MOA groups. Good stuff!

For many years I used Speer boattails and Sierra GameKing 150 grain bullets with 51 grains of IMR 4064. If a rifle won't shoot a good group with 51 or 52 grains of IMR 4064 it probably won't shoot a group with anything. I have also been down the road with IMR 4350. H4350, IMR 4895 and Reloader 16 but I always thought there was something better. The luckiest discovery in my shooting career happened about 10 years ago when I found Reloader 17. The Sierra GameKing 150 grains bullet with 57 grains of Reloader 17 is by far the best load I have used in my rifles. Higher velocity and better accuracy. I seat the base of the bullet even with the back of the case neck. It just doesn't get any better than that.
