Badlands Summit review by Andy Backus of the Long Range Hunting Store:
The Badlands Summit pack is the new and improved version of the famous Badlands 4500 pack which was one of the first full size packs to be designed specifically for the western hunter. In creating the Badlands Summit pack, the guys at Badlands cut 3 lbs compared to the Badlands 4500 by using multiple types of fabrics - strong and durable traditional ripstop material in critical places and extremely light-weight 900 denier ripstop elsewhere.
The suspension system on the Badlands Summit has been completely redesigned to allow maximum airflow through any part that touches your body. It has well padded shoulder straps and waist belt and the padding is contoured to fit your hips and back. The frame on the Badlands Summit pack is extremely light-weight yet extremely strong. It is made of poly-carbonate which also gives it just a bit of flex. The torso length is easily adjustable allowing for a very custom fit and feel. Load lifter straps allow you to pull most of the pack's weight off your shoulders directing it onto your hips instead. The Summit's waist belt and shoulder straps are well padded, but not overly thick allowing you great freedom of movement and the ability to shoot a gun or bow with the pack still on. The waist belt features large zippered pockets perfect for gps, camera, rangefinder, etc.
The Badlands Summit pack's large main compartment features a roll-top access plus a verticle zipper. Above the main compartment rests a large lid compartment that can be removed and used independently as a fanny pack. Behind the main compartment is a large full-access storage compartment featuring multiple mesh organizer pockets inside. On either side of the main compartment are huge vertical pockets which provide tons of storage space for spotting scope, tripod, tent poles, etc. Large mesh pockets on the side provide storage for even the largest water bottles and also allow you to drop your rifle butt in and strap it to either side of the pack. 10 compression straps strategically placed around the pack allow you to sinch the pack down tight and lash tons of items to the outside. This is a great feature if you're planning to backpack deep into your hunting area but also want to be able to use the Badlands Summit pack as a day pack once you reach your location. Even with the pack almost empty, when sinched down tight, it doesn't feel like too much pack as a day pack thanks to its extremely light weight. There is also a pair of bedroll straps at the bottom of the Summit.
I am personally so impressed with the Badlands Summit Pack that I plan to use it this September on my early high-country mule deer rifle hunt in Colorado. I'll backpack in 5 miles from the trailhead and then remain fairly mobile from there over a week's time. The Summit is a full-featured backpack with a sturdy frame and the ability to carry my 50+ lb load comfortably, but it's extreme light weight is what's got me really excited to try it. I'll report back after my hunt, hopefully with pictures of a beautiful velvet rack hanging off the back of my Summit Pack!
