6-700yd Mountain deer gun opinions?

I'm no Internet ninja here but I think and you can check me but the 189 caturusio custom or the new 190 Berger 7mm bullet is the slickest on the planet. Aren't they even slicker than 338s except maybe some of those wildcats? I am not looking to argue because it really doesn't matter to me but there are a lot of people running 162 amax's from 708. I am running them from a 280ai. Hard to argue with 6.6 mils at a grand. YMMV.

Edit to say the Berger is 195 gr and the bc is .794 and the g7 is .406. I know he don't need this much bullet but it is still nasty to say the least. Just saying

Another vote for the 6.5x284. Both my rifles generate 3000 FPS out of 24-26" tubes with brakes, and recoil like a 243. Deadly accurate with 140VLD's, and flattens mulies at the range your looking at, all the way out to 1000 yards.

To my knowledge the heavy 7mm Berger isn't in production yet, or if it is, its still being tested, & not currently on the market.
I've never hered of a caturusio. So I may have been incorrect. The you'd think with all the LR Hunting on this site at least someone would've used it. Or maybe its a FMJ BR bullet, & has no bearing on a hunting discussion? I don't know. I can't say for certian because I'm in familiar with it. If it is a hunting bullet id like to learn more about it, so I wouldn't give false info on the 7 commin up short to a 30.

As far as what's currently offered, the 215, & 230 Berger, which can be used for hunting, are superior to current offerings in 7 mm. With the 210Berger, 208 AMax, & the 200 Accubond being excellent choices as well, even with slightly lower B.C. than the 7 offers. You still win in the momentum category.

Obviously the 338 is in a league of its own, launching 300gr pills. The 7 may look cool on paper, but its no 338. Its not even comparable.

All of the above, however, is completely irrelevant to the discussion the OP started, since he's keeping the 300WSM as is, & going with the .264 so I apologise to have temporarily interrupted this thread.

i would still roll 7SAUM in a nice light package surrounded by a nice light wrapper (Ti, Edge, Banser) and whistle the 162Amax through the shoulders of anything that walks. 6-700 you'll not need more than 6x optics on big game. But... like the others have said, 6.5s don't even get close to sucking, so either way is a win-win.
 
I think I've settled on the 6.5-284 If I can push that 140 berger to 3000 in a 24-26 inch tube. I'm kinda partial to the 700 but does anyone know of another action that would fit the bill without breaking the bank?
 
Depends on what level "Breaking the Bank" is for you. If I was going to have a custom 6.5X284 done with the purpose of making it a mountain or pack gun, I would consider one of the new Pierce Titanium clones and a B@C Carbelite thumbhole stock....And I am partial to Zeiss.
 
Look at the Nosler trophy grade, I had a 280 AI built and wanted a lighter rifle for deer and goats in 280 AI, what I found was a trophy grade in 260 remington, 6.5 pounds, blind magazine, ALL metal cerekoted, 25" tube and a true .5" gun at 100
Under $2000 and its coated against weather, ready to go.:D
 
Not sure if you are looking for stock options but Howa and CZ makes a 6.5x55. Savage has a number of options in 6.5x284.

Aldon, that pierce action looks awesome but I don't think that will make the budget. Maybe someday. Scot E I'm a big fan of CZ my walk around varminter is a 527 varmint in .204 Ruger and it's a tack driver. I will definately give them a look. Thanks again everyone.

Agreed. I love CZ's. The are somewhat unknown and a bit pricier than some but they are usually very accurate right out of the box. At least mine have been.

Nobody likes the 270 wsm with the 165 matrix or the new berger 170 I think? suppose to come out this month? you would want a 9 twist or slightly faster but the bc is over .7 it will have enough energy out to 1000
but it sounds like you have decided on th 6.5x284 no complaint there.
 
I've been considering the same sort of rifle you are contemplating. As much as the 6.5-24 appeals to me, I found a custom .270 WSM I have decided to go with. If I get lazy I can buy a box of shells, Bullet weights are comparable, and BC's are plenty good enough for a hunting weight rifle. Mine will be primarily for elk and I am completely comfortable that the 140 gr. Accubonds are up to the task at the ranges you are talking about, given the usual long range precautions of shot angle, wind, etc.
 
I would suggest to you a 280 ackley improved. I have the leupold 4.5 x 14 Boone & Crocket w/the the new Leupold custom reticle for distance. I have hunted in Africa twice shooting nearly 45 animals at different ranges & I have a ranch in Mexico where I have shot a deer at 670 yards. All are one shot kills. I am using 140 grain Nosler Accubond bullets. The rifle shoots great w/little recoil. I like saying it is a 7mm light. It is custom made for me by Randy Fite out of Houston Texas. I have reccommended this gun to about 4 different people.
