Disenchanted with Remington 700

I do a lot of walk around hunting. I carry all my bolt action rifles except my Model 700 in .17Remington slung with a round in the chamber and the safety on. the 700 is the only rifle I own that will allow the bolt to move when the safety is all the way on. All 4 of my Savages, both CZ's, the Springfield, the Ruger 77 Mk-II, and the Winchester lock the bolt when the safety is all the way on. The 700 doesn't.

That is one of the reasons I only own one Remington. I like Savage, Winchester, CZ, and Ruger better for hunting.

Both CZ527's have only two position safeties. On locks the bolt, off unlocks the bolt and permits it to fire. There is no middle position. I have no problem with that - they are two of my most hunted with rifles. My Old Model 70 .30-06 is the other much used rifle.

My remmy has been that way for 5 decades and has never been a problem during PA whitetails, Idaho Mule Deer, and now as a LR extreme magnum.

I'll bump the bid another 25$

Wait a minute now Roy. 5 decades ago you couldn't open the bolt with the safety on. Not even two decades ago. Let's not get carried away picking on the guy. We don't want to run anybody off.:)

Roy Nimrodmar10 is right I have a BDL700 06 31 years old bought when I was 16 I have to put it on fire to lift the bolt.
Matter of fact the **** thing went off once as I pushed the safty to fire to remove a loaded round. It scared the crap out of me and also my buddy that was 3 steps in front of me. Just thankful it was pointed in a safe direction (up), we were both getting to the truck after a drive.
Needless to say that is the last time I have hunted with a loaded round in the chamber.
Since I have purchased a BDL 22-250 & a new BDL7mm ultra that I converted to
a custom 270AMP but that one has a jewell trigger. But the two newer Rems
both lift with the safty on. Doesn't bother me much I dont use a safty much either.

There ya go, exactly

I couldn't imagine still hunting in thick dark timber and not having a round loaded in the chamber. First thing that would happen is you would get a shot at an unaware Elk and have to rack a shell in. I have seen how incredibly fast an 800 pound bull can move and disappear! Takes about a second and a half.

Lefty
Just out of curiosity, had the trigger on that gun been adjusted? I've worked on a couple that had been adjusted by the user that would do that. The trigger sear engagement had been adjusted too shallow and if the trigger was pulled with the safety was on, it would not fire, but then when you took the safety off it fired. The sear was on the hairy edge and the safety would keep it jamed until it was slid forward, then BANG.

Hey, I'm being picked on here. I'm getting a little long in the tooth and short in memory.:)

I have a circa 50s 721 and a much more recent 700. Am I thinkin' backwards. Which isn't that unusual. I haven't seen either of 'em for over a year.lightbulb

Yes the trigger has been adjusted about 2 3/4" lbs. I have tried to get it to do it again but it never has. Never the less still no bullet in the chamber for me. Maybe in thick dark timber if no one else is with me.
But I prefer the shot accross the canyon at an unsuspecting critter rather than beating the brush. but in Utah after the first 1/2 hour you will probably have to beat the brush a little.
