270 win bullet selection

Plain vanilla hornady interlocks.

130 and 150 flat base are better than the 140 btsp I find, faster killing. The 130 flat base is about the most emphatic killing 270 bullet I've seen for whitetail deer at typical hunting distances. Not neutered though, I load mine to right around 3150-3200 fps as God intended 🤣.
It's been a decade since I read Ken Waters but I believe he also thought flat base Hornady Interlocks in the 270 Win killed better than the BTSP. I'll have to get my copy of Pet Loads out of storage.

You'll need to do some experimentation to find out what your rifle "likes" at what speed.

As you're concerned about full expansion in a relatively light animal several choices come to mind. This is particularly true as your max range stated is 300 yards.

I'd start with good old Sierra Game Kings, Hornady Interlocks and other similar conventional bullets.

These conventional bullets and others like them have the added benefit of being plentiful and MUCH cheaper than the current crop of (over engineered) so called "super bullets."

What did you use on that bull in your avatar?

Hello all I'm in process of working up and good load in my late grandfather 270 win that he gave to me and I'm wouldn't about what bullets to use this will be for deer from up close say 15 to 20 yards out to maybe 300 maybe more just depends. I have everything from 130 gr bullets to 150 gr bullets. What makes me hesitant about what bullets to use is in the past with any 270 I've used and people I know have used is for some reason behind shoulder shots result in no expansion and bullets go straight through and I've personally helped track more deer that had been shot with 270 and never found at anything 100 yards and in and this has been my experience more with 270 than any other cartridge. I would like to use 130 gr partition or hammer bullets of some type. What have yall had good luck with from up close to far in 270 with behind shoulder shots? Thanks
I've been using the 130 GMX with 47.0 grains of H4895 behind it and a Fed210GM primer in Hornady brass. I get 2,925 fps for MV and clover leafs on paper. More importantly, I have killed numerous mule deer, black bear, and elk over the years. My shots ranged from 20 to 400 yards. Most are DRT on the spot. A few went 20 yards. One mule deer went 40 yards, but that's because he was shot a little back on the lungs/liver area. I believe a little buck fever set in on that one. My shots are either shoulder or double lung depending on what the game gives me that year. My Montana hunting buddy has hunted all his life with a 270 and his wall of all North American game/trophies, including a moose and African plains game, show just how good the 270 is!

130 grain Hornady Interlock in front of IMR 4831. Good Ole cup and core bullet. Absolutely does what it should and the wife's Tikka loves them. I shoot 140 grain AccuBond of mine in front of H4831. Never had an issue and accuracy is great out of my Tikka. Used to use NBT in the past and had great performance on diet as well.

I have taken deer, elk and oryx with a Nosler ballistic tip. Before they were available I shot Remington corelock and Winchester power point factory ammo. Longest shots have been 400 to 500 yards. If you can't kill with a.270 you can't buy a big enough rifle to kill whitetail deer

If you have been chasing and losing deer with 'behind the shoulder' shots you need to change your impact forward towards the shoulder/heart. (It is very easy to either misread the angle through an animal or to pull back into the stomach area.) An all copper bullet will guarantee that there is no lead contamination. PS: deer running from 10-100 yards when well hit is normal.

140AB over 53.5gr R16 is my preferred load for my son's .270.

I took my biggest deer with a Partition. It was a high-angle shot from 30yds. It stopped under the skin on the off side. He never took another step.

I've taken many with BT's as well but have settled on the AB as I've changed my preferred placement to through-the-shoulder to reduce tracking to near zero. The loss of a couple of pounds of meat is a no-brainer for the virtual certainty of a recovery.

That's one thing I'd add to this knowledge base forum for a first time 270 loader: don't be afraid to go sloooow. As in slower burn rate powders than what many might suggest.

4831 and rl. 22 is where a lot of data stops and a lot of people do too. But I've had great results with compressed loads of 7828 or rl25 in my 270, 22 inch barrel doing 3200 with 130s and 2960 with 150s. Savage 111.
