Question
I have a set of used TPS rings that were lapped. Are rings lapped to scope and will only work perfect for that scope only.
Or are they lapped to pic rail and will work perfect on all scopes.
They were on a IOR valdada I bought on buy and sell.
I would like to use them on different scope and rail.
Can rings be lapped twice.or will they be to loose.
thanks

It has always been my experience when lapping a set of rings that you are lapping in relation to that particular pic rail, The lapping bar is simply the nominal diameter of the scope that will end up being mounted in those rings but is doing the work of truing the rings to the rail and receiver.

So, short answer, you may absolutely reuse those rings. You will more than likely have to re-lap them to be Trued to whatever base or pic rail they end up on.

I should also add that lapping is primarily for removing any eccentric or out of round condition that is found in the rings themselves. They are often not machined in a pure circle and therefore the lapping bar is removing material to true the surface to meet with a hopefully perfectly round scope body.

Lapping modern rings is a waste of time and will also leave you where you are now. With the machining today if there is a misalignment it is usually in the base to receiver fit on factory rifles and bedding the base is the way to fix it. Not lapping rings.

You can try those rings and see if they work seeing as you have them.

I've done it but always mounted the rings to a rail and it didn't take but a few swipes with the lapping bar. You'll blow the rings out if you go much past the coating on the rings.

The bottom of one ring is 100% shaved and the other one is 80% shaved.
I don't know how much you can take off before they won't hold properly.
I am thinking of going with a 1 piece mount.

Test with the bars, if they line up you're good.
I always start with a good base, bedded to the gun if needed and work up from there. If you get the foundation true, the rings are less of a issue. Using rings with a good reputation of course. They don't necessarily have to be the most expensive rings either.
Lapping is like the neck sizing and full length size thing. I've seen both sides work well, so no one can honestly dismiss either method.

You can try it but if someone removed that much material I would toss them and get new rings and do it right from the get go.

Bottom line if rings have been lapped to a rifle ....they are only good for that rifle.....putting on a different rifle can be different and will be different....
Every rifle action has been finished to remove metal to make it smooth where the ring screw on....every action is a little different....then add drilled and tapped holes to mount ring-base....it will make ever action different....
For the cost of new ring-bases is it really worth damaging a scope mounting it.....
There's only one ring-base made that I know of that's Burris Signature Rings™ with ***-Align® Inserts .....that can correct out of alignment rings....

I have a trued rem 788 bedded with a 24" RKS barrel with 1 in 8 twist and 2.5 lbs trigger.
I use it for hunting.I want to start target and longer range shooting.
I found 1 pic rail in all of canada for my gun.And lucky the new rail has big 8-40 screws.
The gun had a weaver rail (1slot in front and 1 slot at rear). It had 1" burris rings that fit the slots.
My new scope is 30mm and the TPS lugs wont fit into the weaver slots
It had a bushnell elite 4-16x40.And I ugraded to new scope.
A vector continental 5-30x56 sfp. I don't want to damage it.
I can buy a nikon black 30mm 1 piece scope mount to go on new rail.
Cabela's had them on sale ,But are now sold out in canada.
I found one on local buy and sell for sale. They shoudn't damage scope.
But now it will raise my scope hieght. Since my new scope is 56mm obj. I am hoping it won't be to high.
I have a adjustable pad on the stock and can add styrofoam pieces to raise comb hieght.
I would like to change to better stock with solid cheekrest and length of pull. Can't find any here.
Boyds gunstocks has one and we can order from there.
