I volunteer and take disabled veterans, children and any other people with disabilities hunting. I have a Remington model 7 in 7mm-08 that just doesn't shoot well. I plan on saving up to rebarrel it and donate it for use in our hunts. I am just not sure if I should stick to the 7mm-08 or go with another caliber. What are some other options for the little model 7 I should consider?

What he....edit....they.... said 7-08 or 308. I'm not 6.5 fan unless you are going to always and 100% control and require a perfect broadside shot well within the shooters proven maximum range to put the bullet dead exact where it needs to go. Also a quality heavier for caliber hunting bullet (I'm not a fan of target or re-labeled target bullets) even a basic Core Lokt or Interlock is better than some bullets that comes apart easily.

Have been loading a buddies 7mm-08 in a Model 7 for years. A small statured guy. For heavy load 154gr Hornady interlocks on moose I have seen him take down a number with this rig. For deer 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. Same results. Rifle passed on to his Grandson took his first little buck with it this fall. No issues with rifle or loads. Both loads under 13/16" at 100yds.

The model 7 action is just a tiny bit smaller than the Rem 700 short action. The CM family is designed for longer COL - which may not work/cycle in your Model 7. Maybe someone who has done that rebarrel can set the record straight. Regardless, I am with the 7mm-08 group.

Following along, I have the exact same gun for my wife and daughter. Gun just does not shoot well at all. I'm a fan of the 7-08 but wonder if the Model 7 is worth building off of or start over with a different action?

Myself and a few others do this by donating time, equipment and etc so we don't have money coming in to do a custom build. I have the model 7 already and a local gunsmith said he would take 40% off his rates to chamber and install a barrel and any other work needed. After Christmas I hope to have enough money to get a barrel for it.

A few of us veterans try and find places we're it's accessible to people that need wheelchairs and such and then go to different veteran groups to find people who want to go hunting or fishing.

That's a lot of Exact perfect standards but you missed one.....ZERO WIND😚

Some other thoughts.

Why not remove the barrel and have it bored out and re-chambered to 308 and reinstal and head space?

Alternatively (for less $) you can check or improve the bedding (glass bed / free float) and or lap the barrel. Also check or recut barrel crown. Have you thought about an aluminum bedding block?

Also load development may help the current barrel. Try different bullets, powder and weights and seating depths.
