What .284 rifle to build

The .284 and the 175 Berger will get you all you need. Anything else is just extra really.

Pick a bullet then see how much energy you want to have at 1k and pick something that will do it.

my .284 will do 2850 fps with the 175. My 7RM will do roughly the same speed with a 195.

I have a Barlien barrel in a .284, I would like a long range rifle out to 1000 yds, any one have any thoughts?

I have looked at the 28 Sherman and the Mashburn, would like a caliber that the brass is not hard to come buy or form
7mm 300 win, with standard shoulder. Lots of brass, reasonably priced, will push 195 Berger to 2900+ without wrecking brass. I use a 300 win sizer(no/expander deprimed in a lee depriming die) for the body about every 3rd reload and a 7 rem mag die set to size the neck and just touch the shoulder. One pass through the die and I'm ready to shoot. I am going to get a Larry Willis collet base die, as I have cases with 6 & 7 reloads that need reduced just above the belt. Shooting a 27" X-Caliber 5R 8 twist barrel #4 contour on 700 rem

.284 winchester is one of the top calibers in the bench rest community. If I were to do a short action it would be .284 winchester. 28 Sherman is a long action.

7 Sherman Max is my sweet spot (22"). 180s to 3000fps, made on SAUM brass. I haven't had issues getting ADG brass. Rich has some in stock I believe.
There are a bunch of choices in .284. I wish Hornady would make some info available about the 7 PRC/28 PRC. That may be the cat's pajamas.

Something a little off the beaten path to me would be a 7mm PRC (7mm-300PRC) or even that blaser looks to be bad ***

My vote is for the 7x57 AI. Never had one, but have read good things about it, and hope to build one myself someday. Plus the cost of brass isn't thru the roof as with some other rounds mentioned. BTW - What's the twist?

Man I have been there more times than I can count, haha.

OP probably needs to provide more info on what he has and is looking to do- others have mentioned needing to know intended downrange target type, barrel twist, and action length. Lots of great options to choose from but knowing these details would help narrow things down

+1 on 280 Ackely Improved.

The decision should be made (as many have said) based on what you want to do with the rifle. Also make sure you take into consideration what components are available to you. I do not want build a safe queen due no ammo, dies, brass, etc.

Good Luck with the build!!
