Coyote hunting tips

I did play with the female chirps , whines and whimpers of breading season but with my hand calls .

I take my German Shepard with me, he is quiet and lays in the snow next to me. I don't have any runaways on less than ideal hits...

The coyote that I have been around that were full blooded coyote never did get really calmed down and would always pace around even when you got them when their eyes weren't open . They get to wanting to be with other coyote when they get to be a few months old and start howling and want to be free to roam . I saw a picture of one on here that had a purple collar on it , dead , they tend to run off and not come back to you even with a collar on they then get shot in my part of the world and are often aggressive toward people after they have lost their natural fear of humans . I liked a good dog better and a bad dog that wouldn't listen well didn't live long . Coyote are kind of like some people they always have a wild streak in them . They are after all a wild animal and haven't been domesticated and turned into pets .

Dan Thompson (RIP - Dan Thompson Game Calls) from Rawlins, WY had a baby badger that his daughter used to walk on a leash around town.
When I met Dan in 1992 his badger "Bear" was huge!
Dan would take Bear along when he was calling.
Bear did his "badger thing" and wandered around while Dan called.
What a great and natural decoy to have around…

I liked his calls . As with so many calls I mostly used the mouth piece of his Red Desert howler and left the sound chamber off of it then used my hands as a sound chamber . His and Randy Andersons Hot dog are close in design and easy to learn how to use once you figure out that the long sound chamber is kind of cumbersome and gets in your way when you are first learning to use them . I do like the tone of a wooden sound chamber better then a plastic one and feel that it sounds better to the coyote also , more of a mellow tone with better frequencies and less echo . There again that's just my thoughts . I like the sound of Turkish walnut and French walnut is a close second in tone capabilities . They are cost prohibitive unless you know a stock maker and can get their scraps . Maple works well also .

Fighting sounds fox and raccoon definitely work. Coyote fighting sounds I have not tried.

They are effective, but more so during certain times of the year.
When the pups have grown enough to start poking around on their own, they start looking for territory to call their own.
Like a bunch of teenagers loaded up on testosterone, the young males are prone to fight and, just like teenagers, are pretty darned stupid at times.

I have noticed that most types of calls used have better times to be used some in the fall and late summer , some in the winter , some in the spring and early summer and some in full on summer . I have found that for myself that when I figured out what worked best at one time of the year it did the same year after year for me .

I agree...fawn bleats get me nowhere in the middle of winter.

I have discussed this on different occasions . I pay attention to what nature is doing at the time of the year I'm hunting and use the sounds that are there at that time of the year naturally for the most part rabbits and birds are there all year long . puppies are born in the spring , here late April to mid May early June . Antelope fawn and deer fawn are born in early June to early July . There are over laps in the time frame in their usage but if you are using fawn blats in December it's not very natural and a lot of coyote will not respond to it very well as it's out of place to them , you will get a few that will come to it but not the hard core older ones . You can use the puppy sounds now and get the young of the year to come running in but the old wise ones that are killing live stock will set back and not show for it now . So then in the spring time when you have them killing and you have to get them killed you can't get them to come to the puppy sounds when they should so now you will have to figure out what sounds they will show up to . Howls are another sound that are seasonal some howls are spring time sounds some are summer sounds and some are winter sounds . Coyote say different things at different times of the year for different reasons . In the spring of the year two howls two barks and then another howl asks is anyone out there that wants to visit but in the winter not so much . In January - March you will find that a higher pitched female howl by it's self works better , it's a female looking for a mate at that time of the year she howls and waits a few minutes and howls again she listens for a reply before talking again as she can't hear if she's talking . A male lone longer howl will work then as well he's also looking for a mate and does it the same way she does for the same reasons . In June - July here two short howls and two quick barks that are higher pitched work well as that is a female looking for her pups after she has been out hunting or her pup looking for her after it's been out exploring . Yes you can and will get some coyote to come to calls that are out of season but you will also have those that won't come to the call and then when they are in season you will experience having animals that are already burned out on those sounds because they have heard it before . It's one of those things that it depends on what you want from it as to what you do . If you are just looking to get out and have some fun and don't really care about making the most of your calling it really doesn't make much difference but if you are out there to kill problem animals and need to make the best use of your time and efforts it makes a huge difference , as it does if you know that someone else will have to come in and clean up the trouble makers after you left for the year it makes a difference to them more then it does to you .

September and October rabbit and some bird distress till early December mostly . and the coyote vocalizations I described for breading season January till late Match November and December are mostly rabbit and bird distress sounds with some coyote vocalizations using few if any barks short howls mostly some times group howls in the morning and late evening . At this time of the year barks are mostly alarm sounds . Full grown deer and antelope distress blats or when around sheep ewe blats . Some male antelope chirps that kind of resemble chickens or roosters . Adult animal sounds in the winter .
