Real Hunters?

I am wind, rain, mist, and shadow. I move with the grace of a butterflies wings gently lapping at the air. I blend into my environment, I am invisible. I am a myth, the slayer of generations, nameless and terrifying.

I hunt flies with a Bug-a-Salt while wearing Crocs.
Out Flippin' Standing work, right there

I consider myself more of a killer than a hunter nowadays. I feel like I am competing with other people more so than against the game I'm after. I seem to enjoy it less and less this way, but almost feel you have to have an edge to get ahead of the pack. I used to just enjoy watching the sun come up in the woods or over a field and being "out". Now the limited time I get to spend seems more stressed and that I need to be successful.

OP,
The written word can get lost in translation. You really want to see some guys go full returd just mention the word "average" on here. You don't have call them that or even insinuate they are, things can get stupid quick!

A hunter is a person that enjoys the outdoors, follows the rules, is ethically sound, and can come home with smile on his face with or without game.

I know hunters that get mad if they come home with an empty cooler.

I will also add, if you find it necessary to drink a hunt, YOU ARE NOT A HUNTER IN BOOK!

JMHO

16+ years ago I started a celebratory toast after a day's hunt regardless if it is a success or not. So, by your standard, I am not a hunter. Luckily, I do not let anyone define me or my character; whether I am a real hunter or a good person.

Wow, I'm so impressed???
I do it much different but never look down my nose at others who choose their own style.
Were you implying that I was being condescending ( lookin down my nose ) in my post? I can't imagine how you perceived that from anything I said. Absolutely NUTHIN I said was meant that way. I don't look down my nose at anyone for doin their own thing, I respect it actually. It sure does look like you were bein condescending & l lookin down your nose at me though. Its kinda strange that the person I was talkin to did not take that perception, the author didn't either. ONLY YOU. Its clear that we won't be playin in the same sandbox together huh.

I am in the foothills ,hunt public land, border a national park ,surrounded by sanctuaries close the a 50 year old coal mine.
All these places have a abundance of wild life but cannot be hunted, example the mine has a estimated Big Horn sheep herd of 340 head, big herd of Elk ,deer, bears that all live on reclaimed areas.
Hunting pressure moved the game to these sanctuaries and in the dark timber where one has to hunt as opposed to hanging around the boundaries and wait for a animal to step out.
Knowing this I wondered and asked I tought was a simple question. 😳😳
There is no definition for "real hunter". I could include a kid with his dad/mom as someone who is really hunting, all the way to a person who has hunted all over the world and really successful.
I don't think this question can be answered, nor could it be asked without a camp fight breaking out.
I could go on long, but I won't.

I let this one simmer for awhile so I could catch up on the all posts. It was worth the wait. I have hunted with everything from a home made bow and arrows as kid to kill bugs and birds to my modern day rifle and optics. I will adapt to my environment and techniques for the given location and game being pursued. There is no wrong or right way to accomplish your goals it if stays within the letter of the law. Everyone's goals are different, everyone's abilities are different. Before you judge a book by it's cover remember that maybe that younger looking person that looks like they are "road hunting" may have a wheelchair in the truck with him and his buddy is there to help collect his game that he can legally take from the road or vehicle. So before anyone classifies someone have a little moment to reflect on the fact that everything is not always what it may appear, and your style and goals are not the world wide standard.

Very well said. I lived in Europe for a couple years and one of the best things I ever learned from them was "everything is not always as it appears". Excellent advice me thinks and thanks for reminding me of that! All, now get out of the house and enjoy a safe and fun Labor Day weekend!

How many of us are really hunters?
With that statement I like to define a true hunter but also no disrespect to the one's that fall out of this category.
A hunter in my opinion is a person that kills to have hunted.
Hunting means one knows everything about his quarry.
Knows its habits, paterns, where it lives and travels.
The hunter than plans and sets up a rendezvous and than hopefully if he is a competent marksman finishes the hunt.

So again no disrespect for people with a limited time frame, disabilities, traveling to far of locations etc.
These people must rely on outfiters and guides to do to a great extent the hunting for them and they become the shooters.

People hunting the fringes of parks, roadhunters ( with the exception of antelope ) game reserves and sanctuaries also don't qualify.
And neither do drones, heat seekers, fish finders. lol

So how many of us are really a full fledged hunters?
Just wondering.

If we're real hunters put your gun and bow down and hunt like the wolf, the eagle, the shark or the alligator! Really?

Sheesh…what a thread.

OP - who are you to tell other people what they are or are not? This sounds like longbow buys telling compound bow guys they aren't real archers. Or like compound guys looking down on crossbows….etc, etc, etc.

Why do we as hunters look for ways to divide us rather than finding a common ground and being more united? I swear we do a better job at dividing ourselves than the antis do.

Yes I see now
But if so I'll be at least 2000 mtr away from the fire.
On second thought this being a LR forum 3000 would be better😊
