Puzzled!

Thanks for the replies. The measurmant was to the ogive. I will try the Dremel. The way the whole thing went just doesn't seem logical.
Maybe this will help. Hard to decipher with just text and a keyboard, but it sounds like you increased the length enough to jam the bullet in the lands, and then when you extracted the loaded round the rifling held the bullet enough to partially pull the bullet and the extracted round was longer than the one you chambered??? I have one rifle with a badly heat checked throat that will completely pull the bullet with a normal round if the barrel is even just a little dirty. Needs a new barrel but it still shoots really well. The cure is to decrease the oal until the bullet does not touch the rifling.

Hi thanks. Ya know that makes a lot of sense but why does the oal gauge push the bullet .129 further into the rifling?

Not sure possible you are confusing throat with rifling or there is more resistance in the gage than the rifling. Like I said hard to troubleshoot with just text.

Is the barrel truly clean? It has to be trying to do this or you will just chase your tail
I ran into a similar problem and used the unprimed case with the cuts from dremel on sides. Sized case, put some lube on bullet, (not heavy) chamber it like said earlier. Give the bolt a quick lift when extracting. Carefully remove making sure not to let it drag or hit. As stated before, clean before and after if you lube. Not as much cleaning just to remove lube. I have a Savage that was tough to measure consistently. Then for reference a Tikka that was simple. Just to be sure, you know the rifle hasn't been shot a lot, right?

Thanks, the modified case is .002 shorter. But it measures the oal .129 longer.
Like I previously noted, you need to isolate that your brass is not the issue, just like the video I provided in #10. The video addresses the right head space, so the bolt closes with little tension before the bullet is introduced for seating depth.

I make my own modified case fired off my chamber once my head space is established.

Hi thanks, yeah it isn't clean. Now that you mention it that seems so basic. I'm learning as I go, am on it!!

Check a couple things. The OAL has been mentioned, but also check the case trim length.

I had a similar issue in the past a slight trim fixed it. I ran an empty case through the chamber and locked the bolt bolt and realized the bolt was tight. I trimmed slightly and the problem went away. The cases were per spec, but tight. A couple thousands is all it took and we were good to go!
