Im starting a new rifle build. Its going to be built off a defiance tenacity short action with a magnum bolt face. Here is the problem. I cant decide what caliber to use. Ive been thinking 7mm SAUM or a 270WSM. Ive already got a 6.5 prc so I dont need another, which probably means I also dont need a 6.5mm SAUM. This rifle is going to be used for target shooting and hunting. I have rifles to hunt every type of big game in North America with so this dosent have to fill a spacific roll. I just needs to have decent barrel life and the ability to throw heavy bullets at distant targets and critters. Im going to use a 26" barrel. Id like to here your opinions and reasons for opinions. Any real world experiances would be great to here

Have had both. Either should work well for you. I'm partial to the 7 SAUM. I'm running 180's at 2900 fps and it is deadly. Used it for 3 eland in africa a couple of years ago as well as a bunch of other animals. Good luck.

Lots of new heavies for the .270, I'm excited and currently commissioning a .270wsm on a Tikka T3 (so I can load to ~3.2" OACL).

I imagine you could get out to 3.150" with an extended mag box. Limited to a standard/SAAMI 2.83", 7SAUM for sure.

I also have both on Tikka platforms and both have a 1-8" twist. Running 175 elite hunters in my 7 saum and 170 EOL in my 270 wsm. I'm not running either hot as I have a 28 Nosler and 27 Nosler. I would go for the 270 wsm as finding brass and other components might be easier too. Having the 165 matrix, 165 ABLR, 170 EOL and hammer bullets you have enough choices to have a sweet shooting rifle. You might have more bullet choices with a 7mm and ADG brass if you can find them. Hard choice the reason I built both but I keep grabbing the 270 wsm as well as my sons use it more to hunt than the 7 saum.

Matrix isnt making bullets any more. He's pretty much limited to the 170 and 165ablr, and I guess the new 175 tipped game king. I would most definitely go 7saum as adg/gunwerks brass is superior to anything for 270wsm, and bullet selection is much better. 7saum has 5 gr less powder capacity and a bigger bore, so more barrel life too. 7saum is a notoriously accurate case, but the one 270wsm Tikka I had back in the day would stack 140 accubond into tiny groups too.

I'm sure you will be very happy with your tikka, a great combination. With mountain tatical GEN2 magazines I can get 3.37" COAL with my 270 wby and 170 EOL. If you want to try some 165 ABLR or 170 EOL let me know I can send you some to try. I also have other bullets but lighter than what you would consider "heavies". Hammers also have a wide selection too but my experience is that they perform phenomenal with lighter weights with higher speeds. What twist have you gotten? Very excited for you man you will love your 270 wsm.

Thanks brother!

Went with a 1:7.5" finished at 26", .650 at the muzzle.

Pretty much designed this rifle specifically for 155gr Hammer Hunters, which have a particularly good form factor.

I have been having great results with the 140gr absolute hammer in my .280 Rem (3240fps) on deer. I don't think I'll get the 155's going quite that fast in the 270WSM, but due to the high BC they carry the speed WAY out there. Should be able to get 3150fps easy though.

I really appreciate the offer of components, but I am in Canada and I think sending firearm related stuff across the line may be more trouble than it's worth!

I know I'm in the minority, but I actually like the factory t3 bottom plastic and magazine. It can get really cold here, and metal parts can be a pain (literally).

I use both 270wsm more components available 7saum I do like better for elk hard to get brass lean towards 270wsm

Of those choices I'd go 270wsm. The new heavy offerings really change the game for that cartridge.

I have a 7 SAUM and I got Norma brass for it which works. .284 diameter gives you more variety IMO than a .277 so that would be my vote. Not to mention the 7 SAUM has won accuracy competitions over the years. Can't say any 270 has.

You may want to look at the 6.8 western it looks good to me I have 270 wsm and 7 mm saum love them both leaning to 270 wsm with new heavies

I have a similar dilemma deciding to go with the 7 SAUM or the 7-270wsm. I pretty much ruled out the fast twist 270 wsm because of the lack of bullets and difficulty finding fast twist 270 barrels. It isn't much work to size up a case from 270 to 7mm and get to have access to that extra powder. But I'm also building on a Tikka action so that 3.2" magazine is fantastic for the wsm case. In the Tenacity action I would probably go with the 7 SAUM. Norma makes brass for both cases so it really comes down to bullet selection and action length for me.
