Considering 6mm x .284 vs. 6mm-06

I built a standard 284 on a Turkish mauser action and had to open the feed rails slightly to get it to feed. The nose of the bullet would hit low on the face of the barrel. Once I opened it up so the round would come up with the nose higher, I never had a problem. Since then, that barrel went south. On the next barrel, I went to a standard 280 Rem and it still feeds fine.
How many rounds do you think you had on the barrel when it gave up?

If anyone is curious, the 6mm PRC feeds through a Winchester 70 WSM action like melted butter through a funnel. Factory magazine length on my 70 WSM action is 3.010". Plenty of room.

Sweet! What twist are you running?

My bad, I just saw where you said it was a 284. I was thinking 6mm-284
I also built a 6x284 with a slow twist barrel to shoot 70 grainers for groundhogs. 70's running at 3750fps lasted about 800 rounds then was toast......but some very dramatic red mist shots that I'll never forget. 😁

I just ordered a prefit barrel for my tikka in 6mm-06 AI. I was on the fence between making a 6mm-280 AI but decided to do the '06 variation after I found a set of Redding dies for sale. I will be using a 26" in 1-7" twist, 270 win starline brass and Hornady 108 eldm's. I also have a bunch of berger 115 VLD's to try as I wanted a little bit more than what my 6mm CM is doing with Berger 108 elite hunters. My COAL is limited to 3.37" in my tikka.

I heard reports of folks running 108 elds in the 6mm creedmoor to 3300 fps with RL26 but brass was gone within a firing or two. I opted to go for more capacity and try for those same velocities & hopefully get more firings on my brass. I'm going to try N165 because it's supposed to be one of the coolest burning powders there is. Touted to be cooler burning than H4350, with the burn rate somewhere around RL23 & 25. So hopefully a smidgen better barrel life with the cooler burning powder but honestly It will take another generation to see 800-1000 rounds on it.

7.75 twist. Was bought as a 7.5 twist but it physically measured 7.75 after checking it several times. Which was ok with me because I was actually wanting a 7.75 twist but it supposedly wasn't on the shelf.

Reviving this thread in hopes some 6mm-284 or 6mm-06 owners have ran some of the 105gr and heavier bullets. I will be working on 6mm PRC load development soon with N165 with 108 elds, 110 A-tips , 110 smk, or 109 Berger's. I have those on hand. 26" barrel 7.75 twist. Seeking feedback on observed velocity & accuracy with any of the projectiles mentioned.
I built a 6-284 on a Rem 700 long action with a 28" Lilja 8 twist barrel. I shoot 105 Beger HVLD at 3400 using Retumbo into one hole groups at 100. It does the same thing with 105 RDF bullets. It is one of the funnest builds I have ever done. Burris 5-25 veracity on top makes for a sweet rifle.

That's what I was hoping for, something fun & easy for everyone to shoot with enough zip to quickly bring down deer sized animals. The bare rifle weighs right at 8lb with a 26" light palma barrel and will probably be around 9.5lbs when I get the scope on it. So hopefully not too much to carry but still enough weight to soak up recoil pretty good.

I'm getting 3100 FPS in my 6mm CM with H4350. I was hoping for 3300+ with my 6mm-06 AI, I do have a spare magnum action and contemplating on doing a 240 wby but went with an ackley version as I just love my AI's and want to save it for a 257 wby and blackjacks.

I have been using the 6mm-06 for hunting for quite awhile. I have been running the 105 hvld, 25-06 brass with MRP. I initially ran it to 3,300 with no signs of pressure in a 25" barrel, but run it at a very mild pressure load at just over 3,200. It has done great on deer for me, and shoots lights out in a light weight rifle. I have some 108 EH I'm going to try with some more temp sensitive powders, just haven't got there yet. If I can be of any help let me know.

Did you ever by chance make any shoulder shots on deer with the 105? I'm just curious if I need to stay away from a shoulder with the bullets I mentioned.

Not very many through the shoulder, the ones that did were fine but I mainly shoot for the vitals. Have shot several in the neck also (hunt in tall sage brush a lot) and all were fine. The ones I did shoot in the shoulder performed well with minimal meat loss, but again that is only a few. I do inspect and clean up the tips and make sure they are open. Over all I have been really happy with there accuracy and performance, that's why I didn't jump right in on the 108's. Even with the light weight rifle w/o a break, there is almost no recoil and it is a joy to shoot and pack.

I don't shoot for the shoulder either. I've landed a couple on the shoulder because I didn't allow enough for wind. I'm hoping I can get the 110 smk to shoot. I've heard seating depth can be finicky with them.
