What is better than the Weatherby?

These days it's hard for me to pick just one favorite .30 cal. cartridge with so many good ones to choose from.

The .300 Weatherby is certainly a fine cartridge for any longer range hunting and shooting, there is no doubt.

The .300 Norma Mag and the AI version are certainly in there kicking and screaming.

The .300 PRC is another good cartridge.

Then include the:

30 Nosler
.300 RUM
30-378 Weatherby

But probably the most popular and long lasting is the .300 Winchester Magnum. Both the civilian versions and the military derivations.

There are several more but others should post their favorites.

This is just me, but to 600 yards I'd take one of the Big 7's each and every day over the 300Wby.

My reasons, I refused to have a gun over 8.5 pounds (sling, rounds, scope) and I refuse to use a brake.

Added to that the Big 7's will have roughly 10 % less recoil, they'll shoot roughly 10% flatter, they'll penetrate roughly 10% more and they'll drift 10% less.

All in all to me and for my uses I'll go Big 7 each and every time over the big 30's.

Lastly, shooting them from less than perfect field positions will also push me to the Big 7's as well.

I used to shoot a ton load of chucks each summer, only used my big game rifles. My Big 7's were infinately easier for me to stay on my game with. Again, I'm not using heavy guns and I won't use a brake.

Just my way and my thoughts...:)

According to Hornady, the 300 wby is exceeded in performance by the 300 Dakota, 330rum and 30-378 wby, in their 9th edition. I think there may be other wildcat 30cals that do as well. IMO, we are in the halcyon days of rifles (excepting right now) with so many good offerings and your thought on the 300 wby is valid. My hunting choice is the 300wsm... smooth shooting and efficient. If I could afford one right now, I'd get a 300prc.

The Mash has been my baby for several decades. Yes the 300 Wby is a great one no doubt
So many positives with the 7mm Mashburn. The Mash case easily can be made from one pass on a .300 Win Mag case. Inexpensive and plentiful brass is a big plus. The Mash has a nice long neck, perfect for the 175 grain Nosler Partition. The Mash has an ideal powder capacity. Maybe 5 or 6 grains more than the 7 Rem Mag, just right for Retumbo or Ramshot Magnum with 100 percent load density. It is ideal. But the Weatherby probably is more lethal.

That darn 300 WSM is a excellent one! Taking game isn't rocket science a good bullet in a good place and you're golden.

Knowing when to shoot, where to shoot it and hitting it in the right place is way more than important than head stamps.......

The 300 Weatherby mag was avalible 50 yrs ago and will probably be in another 50 yrs. I don't believe this holds true for many of the cartridges mentioned in previous posts. On the topic of the 7mm's the often overlooked 7mm Weatherby mag is a great 7mm round, maybe the best of the 7mm stable. JMO

7mm Weatherby is fantastic, you are right. The 7mm Mashburn is what the 7 Rem Mag should have been. Remington made it a little bit too small. They did not fully utlize the magazine length of the model 700.

Better is a relative term. Better in what way ? It's also a personal decision based on a number of reasons. Price of brass a factor. Availability is another. Seems like today most shooters looking for a new cartridge are looking forward not backward. The newest 30's aren't the Weatherby's or Win mags. Nosler and PRC are the new kids on the block. The new big kid is the 300 NM and it's improved version is gaining popularity big time. Sherman's magnums are another and one I'll soon be building. If I had to pick one as the better of all, I couldn't. Being so close in performance that it's a matter of personal choice. All things being relatively equal, I chose the 30 Sherman magnum simply because it's not a common cartridge yet. Requires forming brass and specialty loading dies. That's what my reason for it was. I prefer non-common cartridges over standard(on the shelf) cartridges. Brass availability is important and several of the 30 cartridges have many options. Not sure about Weatherby but I'm assuming only Weatherby offers it. Hard to keep up.
