shaving too much weight just adds to the recoil. Kids beat stuff up so I won't put huge $$ in something for them; if it'll shoot decent groups and fit them well that's what really counts.
I set up my boys on a TC 22 first, then as they grew a bit I put them on a win m70 Coyote in 25wssm... They are getting a bit bigger now so my youngest is on a 6.5 creed (12 years old) just a Ruger American with a 20x Weaver GS on top; my 18 year old is on a tikka T3xlite in 7rem with a straight 6 Sightron on top- I wanted nothing for him to have to mess with and decent trajectory without really heavy recoil so we went with 140's- He tried the 175's I loaded for him and they were a bit much...

Caliber I'm not 100% on yet. 6.8 spc, 6mm br, 6.5 grendel, or maybe something with a 473 bace to make the switch when they get older.

Kids .243 simple easy light deadly.... readily available shells everywhere....cheap to shoot .. no need to suppress and add extra weight, my 12 year old granddaughter shot 3 deer with hers this year....her first year

Have any of you guys looks at the black collar arms pork sword? It's what I had in mind when I first started looking at this project.

I will only warn a good cheek weld is important to young shooters...it builds good habits, the pork sword..if i cheek rest can be found to go in one of those slots...then good...
