Dear All,

I am contemplating a rifle build and more and more leaning towards the 7 mm SAUM chambering. What action would you use, ideally under a grand? Barrel length and twist rate?
The rifle will be used for hunting.
thank you for the insight, Ferenc

Defiance XM. #4-#5 fluted or a Bartlien #4 or 13 carbon. 24-26" barrel. .225-.235 FB for 180-190 bullets. About 3.150 coal. You can get away with a short action if you want to run 168's. Or if your into RL26 it can make the 180's sing (2980-3030)

Defiance anTi XM action is just under your $1000 budget. Then however you need to use their alloy XM BDL bottom metal with box, spring and follower that costs $300 more.

I'm building a 7SAUM on that action with Manners EHSL stock and Bartlein #4 CFW barrel.
22" 8.5 twist and will run the 175 elite hunter or 180 hybrid. Suppressed with my Ultra 7.

Wow, that sounds like the mirror image of my plan, though I would like to go with a 24 inch barrel at 1:8.

will check the defiance tenacity.

Indeed, I'm torn btw short and long actions. I would like to be able 180 grain bullet but would also like the build to remain compact and relatively light... are these desires mutually exclusive?

I've got a Remington model seven 6.5 saum with a 26" bartlein 3b fluted in the works. Should end up being the equivalent over all rifle length of a 25" barreled long action 700. I debated on trying to fit a 7mm saum into the 3.850" mag box with 162gr bullets. I still think it would be a nice build in a 7mm saum.

that AnTi action from Defiancevsure looks good. And they come in medium length, I wish there was a lightly used one available. Well,
i guess I just have to keep looking...

The 180 has it's place with the saum, but you might want to get out your calculator to see where the 180 class takes over the 160 class. Short barrel hunting rifle in a 7 saum, I wouldn't be looking at the 180's. Personal preference for sure, but I think the 162 or 168 is going to shine in that rifle.
For that, I do with a 22-24" barrel, 9 twist, defiance action. (I've said it before and I'll say it again, there is no need for really fast twist barrels unless you actually need them.)
Good luck with your build.

9 twist would definitely be perfect for 160-168s. Many folks even do fine with 180s in a 9 twist.
