Which 300?

ALAN - I think the info provided is all good as well as your preferences . However whenever I think of caliber for hunting I always think of availability. If some how your ammunition and your firearm get separated you might need to go into a small, out of the way, rural shop , hardware store etc, and hope they have your caliber. I have seen this happen in Canada and the USA. Most often of course due to airline travel mishaps. GO FIGURE. My personal choice based on the previous statement would be 300 Win Mag. I've seen it everywhere, not so much the others.
Good luck on your final choice and good hunting. Tommy

30 nosler bud!

nightforce NX8 4-32 F2 or F1

and don't do the Sendero lite run a standard sendero

I have a 20" 10 twist 30 nosler with ultra 9 on it or now my ultra 7
215 berger at mid 2800's low es and very accurate with regular powder not unicorn tears ..

and I also have a 300 rum wearing a 22" 9 twist proof sendero shooting the 181 hammer @3200 fps with regular powder not unicorn tears

dont believe the hype of shorter barrels need smaller cartridges to work great!!! The theory always rings true if you want performance in any barrel length your gonna have to burn some powder!!

Can't go wrong with 300WM for your stated purpose and the wide availability in factory loads make it versatile. I personally went with the 300PRC because I wanted LR hunting and ELR target shooting with one rifle.

On the 300PRC side; recoil would be stout with a lighter weight rifle, but I really like the cartridge. While not as available as 300WM and certainly not in the variety of load I have been able to find Hornady 212 ELD-X ammunition in 300PRC without trouble in Idaho. I've actually been surprised that several places carry it.

300WM vs 300PRC was the decision I made this year and I went with PRC, but if I were only considering this rifle for hunting I may have gone WM instead.

Alan, that sounds like a wonderful build. I'd think a 22" barrel on the PRC or Win Mag with the suppressor with a 2.5x10 NXS would be pretty hot stuff on an elk mountain. I just recently started goofing around with my 30-06 Featherweight and 212 ELD's at 2700 FPS and man, it has made me a believer. Another 100 or better FPS should be entirely possible without straining anything from a 300 PRC or Win and just give you more reach.

Sounds like an excellent build. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

I'm not a newbie. Work in the shooting industry. My last 30 cal was 30-06 then 30-06 AI; 10+ years back. Have harvested numerous elk with several 6.5's and 338's at 810, 820 and 950 yds. Getting older so want a lighter build. Basically, an elk rifle for LR; not ELR. I've been shooting PRS/NRL before their was a PORS/NRL so my abilities are there.

Rem 700 LA Mag bolt face, SS
Proof Carbon, 20-22", 30 Cal. 8 twist. Sendero or Sendero Light TBD.
Likely a Proof Carbon stock with BDL BM.
Timney CE 2-stage trigger
Optics to be determined but likely some NF flavor
Muzzle break or likely Thunderbeast 30 Ultra

Thinking 300 WM, 300 PRC or 30 Nosler. I don't have experience with any of them.

Any pitfalls, issues, problematic/perceived or real I might miss? Throw in any additional info, if you wish.

Thank you

BP- every time I look at your avatar I reach for my 45-70 or 454. Haven't hunted bear in 4 years. Great looking bear !!

If weight and compactness are critical then consider 300WSM in a short action. Short action 300WSM with the same length of rifling is 1" shorter and lighter than the other choices. You will always be able to get 300WSM brass and ammo, the same cannot be said for some of the others.
