Did 6.5 PRC obsolete the 6.5 CM only to be made obsolete?

270 win with a 10" twist has made it a 130gr one trick pony. It would have been nice to shoot 160gr boats at 2800+ fps all these years, but it is crippled. Think of a 7mm RM with an 11" twist barrel? Nobody in their right mind would make that barrel.

Sorry, but my 270 win with the 10" twist barrel doesn't excite me. My 30-06 can shoot < 145gr bullets fast for hunting at closer ranges and put just as much hurt on an animal.

I like the 270Win. Think it is perfect for lighter bullets and it's intended hunting purpose. Just bought one for my son. Cannot however think of any way it is better than a 280ai except for factory ammo availability.

Used the 150 gr Fusion 270 WIN ammo for the first time hunting last fall. It was accurate during my pre season sight in and shooting. Was able to drill a nice coues buck at 220 yards right behind the shoulder blade (was where I was aiming). Before last year used the 140 gr SST Superformance ammo for decade or more. Why mess around with a 130 gr when the 140 SST G1 bc .495 leaves the muzzle at almost 3100fps.

People keep writing off the 270 win but it just keeps killing big game animals smooth as butter and is everything a 6.5 Creed or PRC is and more out to normal hunting distances 600 yds and under. You'd be doing yourself a disservice putting away your 270 for a 6.5.

In reading all the posts the opinions all have merit. It doesn't matter the size of the caliber if you fail to consider what the purpose and intended goal you have in mind. From my introduction to shooting and hunting at a young age my Dad made the point of making the experience fun and enjoyable. B B gun. 22lr, 410 shotgun to a 303 Enfield I bought with my own money at 8 years of age safety was first and foremost. I 'm 74 today and training by hiking with a 40lb pack for my deer hunt in Utah this coming October. Both the 6.5cm and the 6.5 PRC are no different them and open end box wrench or crescent wrench. They both can turn a nut. For the past 6 years I have been an active and contributing member of my local Varmint hunting club. During that time I have observed some members just listen and never have anything to say positive or negative. Others ask questions and provide their opinions. But they are all members in good standing. We all bring something to the table. Rifles are tools. You shouldn't shoot at an elk with a 22lr or in turn blast a jackrabbit with a 338. Some do. Know the animals you hunt and the most effective bullet placement to humanely harvest them. If you hunt in the mountains or open plains you need to understand the ballistics, terrain and weather factors that will make or break the successful hunting experience. Buy what Fits you and that your extremely effective with.

What I tried to say but failed at, is that the 270 win would be better then the 280ai except that it can't shoot heavy rounds. The 270 win is kind of the sweet spot for powder and velocity for its caliber. It could push a higher BC bullet faster and with less recoil then a 280 ai, IF it could stabilize such round and one was created..... but one hasn't been because all the rifles produced for 270 win are crippled with a 10" twist barrel.

My rifles: 22lr 9422 lever rifle, 22 Hornet, 243 AI, 243, 6.5 Grendel Howa mini, 6.5 x 284 Norma, 7-08 Rem, 308 win, 30-06, 270win, and a 300 Win Mag. Building a new 243 AI when completed I will post.enjoy

Love my 243 AI. I shoot 75-87 grain for varmints. I look forward to seeing your new 243 AI.

The 270 would never quite catch up as it has less powder than a 280 AI. It would be fairly close but couldn't surpass the 280 AI. Now a 270 AI with say a 170 EOL would be right there or even better.

I would veiw the PRC as just giving me more options. I could be way off on this though.

Taking a closer look what I see is shooter gravetating toward the short magnum cartriges with the exception of the 300 WM. The PRC and the more powerful 26 Nosler and the 300 wsm are the new go to calibers. My opinion as a PRS shooter. As for the 6.5cm, the 6cm, the 6x47 and the 6.5x47 will stick around for a long time. The 308 has a strong intrtnational audiance. Different stroks for different folks!

Custom Rem700 SA, action tuned/trued perpendicular to rifle bored. H&S Precision Varmint/Tactical stock, Hart premium 1-7.5 twist, 11 degree crown recessed 1/8th, Triggertech set at one lbs, pictinney 32 degree one piece scope base pinned to rifle action. This is my second 243AI. The first one is a 1-10. An awesome shooter. The new rifle is for antelope and prairie dogs.

270 is an outstanding caliber my Dad killed everything he shot at.

I believe the success and failure of any cartridge these days is the web. News travels fast. Like wildfire. The good and the bad. Without the web even the 6.5 cm may not have the popularity it has now and for sure the PRC calibers would be lagging. The calibers you mentioned above were popularized over time by our grandparents and maybe even great grandparents. And none of us who grew up with those calibers are ready to just walk away from them. Except maybe the 30-06! Just kidding Pepaw!!!
