Baboon culling in South Africa

Few answers,
1. Semi Auto , Semi autos are not allowed to be used for any hunting in South Africa, farm owners and registered culling outfits may apply for a permit to shoot/cull with a semi auto.
2. Eating baboons , generally baboons are not eaten , however in some of the more rural areas baboons are eaten by the locals and considered to have mystical properties.
3. Baboons are not found every where , generally they live in mountains or heavily wooded areas . Botswana has few of either , however there are baboons in certain areas . I have come across baboons on flat sparsely wooded terrain , with the closest hills/mountains miles away .
4. Baboons attacking humans. Generally baboons are weary of humans , especially where they are hunted . They will learn what a man and a rifle look like, they know the difference between a man and a woman (FACT !) they are highly intelligent and can reason, speculate and work out technical puzzles. Where they loose there fear of man is in areas where they are fed, often in tourist areas . (You will often see the sign "do not feed the baboons" yet people ignore this ………. then there are often confrontations , not many people are bitten but every year there are one or two incidents where someone is bitten , (normally it is bad) but baboons will not just walk up and attack you .... If he is in your car and you get in to get him out, expect to go to causality for a few hundred stitches . A female protecting her baby will rip you apart ....till she can escape with her baby ....... I have been confronted by a large male .... who stood up on his hind legs ....... he hissed and groaned and barked , I bent down to pick up a rock and he was off , then stood at about 100m shouting his displeasure that I was there .......would he have attacked me ?..... I doubt it would have attacked . If I were only 4' perhaps then ..... but generally they keep there distance ..... Baboons, contrary to popular belief are not a leopards favourite food, because leopards know the injuries that they can inflict ..... (there are leopards they do focus on baboons) There are more Shark attacks and people killed by Nyala and Bushbuck than people attacked by baboons.

Here's one I took in Namibia in 2017. Where I was hunting they definitely tried to quickly get far away if they spotted a human. I suppose it's because they had been hunted before. The land owners do their best to eliminate them due to the damage they cause. They are absolutely a very smart animal. So, for me it was a challenging hunt. It's a great animal to add to a plains game hunt.

My longest African shot was a baboon at 450 yards. They are a hoot to hunt. Jackals are a lot of fun to hunt as well.
