300 PRC hunting build

Curious on your barrel recommendation. My 300 prc was built for backpacking. 22 in barrel. . I know ya lose a little in speed but with the high BC bullets and weight I've lost nothing in accuracy. The only barrel that was a must was at least 28 on my 338 edge. So I'm curious where you're coming from

My take on it is the PRC is a niche cartridge, It was designed slightly different than other .30 cals that it allows you to shoot big heavy bullets relatively fast in a factory chamber. It is one of the smarter designed cartridges of today. When you take away speed, it turns into something you can match with a standard 300 win mag, you can cram long heavy bullets in 300 WM loss case capacity for slower velocities but you can near match a short barreled PRC. It no longer serves the same niche and is just another 300. Light back packing guns blasting 75-80gr of powder and heavy bullets are zero fun to shoot and don't interest me. Light weight and big magnums are not my cup of tea.

That's where I come from on this. Like I said its just my opinion, not necessarily right or wrong.

i have a cvhristson arms ridgeline 300prc but changed barrel to a proof research in a 7mm/300prc w/195 grn berger elite hunter 75.5 h1000 3040 fps 1/2 3shot at 100yrds what is wrong w/that guess u people dont have the money to build one have to have bushing dies or ptg dies w/ die reamer

Is that 2900 fps a pretty hot load ? That's great speed from the wsm actually.
It's 1.5gr below pressure signs but on the warm side, I ran them all the way up to 3017fps(71gr) but it was HARD on brass. RL26 is a great powder for the wsm. Supposedly ADG is coming out with brass this fall. That will be a game changer in the wsm game for sure!

a 7mm-300 PRC shooting the 195 eol would get way out there. But like you said its a wildcat and all the extra work that goes with it. I'm not ready to do that. (yet)

Building one of these currently. 26" carbon rock creek 1:8.5tw, bat HR action, xlr element 3.0 magnesium chassis. Reamer has 240 freebore. Plan is to shoot 195s, 184s and 180s to find best candidate. There are a few of these out in the wild. Alex Wheeler has a reamer, and Dallas Lane has one coming for my build.

What about a 300 Norma improved? I know it's a larger action but Ryan Pierce builds a heck of an accurate one - check out his posts for more info. With a proof barrel they're still around 8lbs without a scope.

How serious are you about 1000yds? I have never actually ranged an elk at 1000 yards. Its seems pretty common to have them 600-800 or way farther. It may just be the way the land is shaped here but I have talked to a lot of guys that have had similar experiences. The reason I ask is because those 1000 yard shots just are not that common. I think you will find you will kill a lot more elk 700 and in. I shoot a lot of hunting rifles at 1k, and a SERIOUS 1000yd elk rifle is a very different animal than what most guys are building. If I had a spot I knew I would be killing a lot of elk at 1k, it would be a 20lb .338 pushing 300 grain bullets. They just hold the center of the target better than any of the smaller rounds day in day out. The drops seem to hold more consistent through atmospheric changes as well. I also am a fan of the big 30s, 30-28 nosler, 300 prc, 300 Norma Improved for mid weight rifles, and they are certainly capable at 1k, but you do see them get beat up more in conditions and you will need to watch conditions more closely. 7mms are great all around and recoil so much less, but personally I wouldnt shoot an elk at 1k with one. But they are my favorite for 600-700 max guns. I know we would all love a 6 pound 1000 yard elk gun, but everything is a trade off and contrary to the marketing, guys that shoot a lot at those ranges will tell you bigger and heavier is better day in day out.

Supposedly ADG is coming out with brass this fall.
Dont know were you got that the emails I've got from them said " no plans in the works"
I wished they would though so do alot of others that own 300wsm the BR guys who shoot them are begging.

Well here is my 2 cents !!
I read 1000 yrds and Elk ...you had my attention !

I built two I identical 338 's for the purpose of Elk at 1500 yrds .
Remington action 30 " carbon barrels t-3 Termanator , I single feed both of them at the time. One is a 338 Rum & 300 gr bergers the other is a 338 Edge & 300 gr bergers both were close at 2884 and 2883 ft.per.sec. I spent countless hrs preping for the distance . Both rifles came in ready to hunt at 10.6 pounds .

The darn Elk was thinking something different last Fall .
I shot my Bull at 1244 yrds . My personal best . I dont recommend this to just anybody.
I have Shot steel at 3027 yrds . With my Heavy 338 Edge .
Anyway 1000 yrds is easy to say ..just hard to put together!!
Best of luck in your Quest for the one !!

I have one of his 300nmi's, it's a good rifle. If I had to do it again, I'd go with Alex Wheeler or Dallas Lane on the build. The kelbly action does the job, but leaves a fair bit to be desired, for the price, a better action should be included. At this point in time I'd look to other barrel manufacturers than proof, too much inconsistency in their barrels right now from many reports in the trade. A proper setup for a 300nmi is where the smith has his own sizing reamer specd to his chamber, and he makes the dies for you. He shouldn't trust Hornady or Whidden to get it right, which they don't every time.
