I guess the 17 WSM is effective on big coyotes.

Gentleman I am writing this in the hopes of getting some, (the best) information that I can find in the hopes of clearing up my mind on the choice that I am trying to make concerning the purchase of a HMR 17???

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and I have hunted in this state for over 60 years and laity i have been offered a deal by a member of the Game commission to eradicate a section of the State of coyotes that have been slaughtering the new born fawns of the deer as soon as they hit the ground..

In the past couple of Months I have been using a 300 Blackout but even though I use a suppressor on it, the report is way to loud and if there are more than one at the bait sight, I can get one and the others will disappear, never to be seen again and the range of the black out with only 10 grains of H110 is to short..

I am really looking at the HMR 17, Rugar Model 8311 for a replacement for the 300? I would like to stay
less than $600.00 for the 17?? I have several scopes that I can use..

I have the stainless one with the laminated thumb hole stock. I really like it. I'm experiencing good accuracy with mine.

Quiet and powerful are a difficult combo, I don't think anything will work for more than one shot.

Personally, unless you are keeping your shots relatively close-ish, none of the rimfires are a "good" choice. But, if you must use a rimfire, the 17 WSM is definitely King of the rimfires. I shoot just about everything suppressed and my 17 WSM is minimally louder than my 17 HMR but the 17 WSM hits quite a bit harder.

Not that I think the 17 Hornet is a "great" choice for a coyote gun, but it's substantially better than, ANY, of the rimfires and is still very quiet shooting it suppressed. You can get a new CZ 527 17 Hornet for just a few dollars over your $600 limit and have a much nicer and consistently better shooting rifle than any of the 17 WSM's or 17 HMR's.

Sorry folks, but all this 3/8-1/2 inch groups at 100 all day long stuff, with any 17 WSM or 17 HMR, is pure BS. The ammo for ANY of the rimfires, except match grade 22LR ammo, is mediocre at best and the consistency of it just won't support those kinds of groups with any amount of regularity. If someone has a 17 WSM or 17 HMR that will consistently shoot 1in at 100yds all day everyday, they indeed have a keeper.

I must have mis read the responses because I didn't see anyone put 3/8-1/2" all day. I agree that is not realistic. But after four guns and a stock up grade I have one that has shot some 1/2" groups, 3/4" groups and lots of 1" groups. If it didn't I would not keep it. My 17hmr won't shoot 3/8th" groups all day either. Not many guns will with me behind them.

I love skepticism just because B23 can't get one to group no one else can either

I'm a big fan of the 17 WSM and I've had a HB SS Bmag since they very first came out. I've had a little work done to mine and it's definitely better than most. I have put thousands of rounds through it shooting sage rats and mine shoots, consistently, as well, or better, than any other 17 WSM or 17 HMR I've had or been around.

I have absolutely no issue with how mine shoots, but if ANYONE is claiming consistent .5 groups at 100, all day everyday, then yes, I am saying they are 100% full of it, because the ammo just won't support that kind of consistency. Hell, I'm not sure any factory ammo will support those kinds of claims in a centerfire, let alone a rimfire, excluding 22LR benchrest ammo.

Now, just to be clear, I'm not saying those kinds of groups have never happened, but I can promise you, they are NOT happening on a consistent basis, in anyone's gun, let alone "all day everyday".

Hornady has proven to work best for me,very consistent,1.5 in at 100,Savage claims the HB will do 1in,I may trade and get the heavy barrel,however since I practice regularly 1.5 will probably suffice.

You probably already know this, but regardless of what the wrapper on the box says, ALL, 17 WSM ammo is made by Winchester.

Keep us updated on kills with the .17 WSM as I have one also in the Ruger 77, mine prefers the 20 grain. Would be great on keeping hides from Nov-Jan as it should stay in the body cavity.
