I have a Winchester bolt action 270 cal. Barrel is stamped "Ranger". I'm looking to dump the weaver mounts and rings and replace with new. I've done some research but am still hesitant. Is this action compatible with Pre-64 model 70 bolt patterns? Not much out there for "Winchester Ranger".
Please advise, Thank you.

Has little in common with a pre-64 other than the Winchester name. It is however a good basic post 64 push feed model 70. You can re-stock it and add one piece bottom metal easily. There are several trigger upgrades available for reasonable money. Talley one piece rings are also reasonable and a good choice. Also a very easy action to re-barrel when the time comes. Just search for post 64 model 70 (not classic)

Have fun

What type of rings/base are you looking to use? Like stated the ranger is basically a low level post 64 M70 push feed. It has a simple birch stock and ADL style trigger guard. It's still a M70 action and trigger though. Very easy to adjust/respring the trigger also.

So a friend complained that his rifle wont group. Turned out to be the Winchester Ranger rifle I asked about. After properly cleaning the barrel. Super bad, at least twenty black tar lookin patches came out before I called it clean. It also had weaver mounts, with picatinny high rings that were clamped crooked of course. Cheek weld was impossible from standing let alone prone.
I mounted a cheek rest, DNZ medium ring/mount which left .100 between objective and barrel, and ACD bubble level. Then loaded up Winchester brass, Hornady 140 SST, H4831 (59.0gr) CCI BR-2 primers, and out to zero. 3/4 groups at 100yds off bipod and rear bag rest. I'd say it's "fixed".
Thanks to those that shared knowledge.
