So I"m debating what to build and what I'd need to order. I have two options for actions.

First is a Savage 10 short action with a 223 bolt face. It looks very doable to swap out the bolt face with a mag one. Yes? Then get a barrel and screw it on and head space and good to go.

Other action is a Rem 700 LA with standard bolt face which puts me in the 6.5 or 338 Sherman area.

Yes, both could be an option but limited funds so they would not be done at the same time. No real need for either just something that nobody else has around me.

Help please :D

This barrel is available to me for $280

Pac-Nor: .308 caliber, 5 groove 10 twist, super match grade, stainless, Lilja #3 contour, 1.15" diameter shank. Contour is basically what would be a #2.5 pacnor if they had one. .625" at the muzzle

How heavy could one go with 10 twist?

I'm sure it would do fine, but for heavies I'd go faster. Probably heavier on the profile, too, unless you're wanting to make a certain weight. I'd probably start at a Bartlein 3b contour and consider going fatter, with a 9 twist or even 8. 10 twist will get the job done most of the time but with faster twists available now, why limit yourself?

Yes...the short action bolt face change would be easy on the Savage.

The LA Rem is std bolt face. No plans to change that. I guess I thought we were discussing the 300 Sherman. Which requires the std bolt face.

Would a 9 twist still be required ? And heavier barrel? Not trying to make weight in anything

I must have misread- thought he was considering changing the short action savage bolt face, didn't see anything about changing the bolt face on the Rem700. That would require a gunsmith to do if keeping the original bolt. Easy to do! But you do have to factor it into the build.
Yes, I think it was the 223, but now he knows. thx

The 300 Sherman is a std bolt face. I think we got sidetracked by the 30 SM being brought up.
SM, SS, SST, 30, 300. :eek::eek:

So with std bolt.... What's the best bang for the buck? Barrel specs to get the most of it? Twist, contour, etc
