What would you rebarrel a .270 into?

For steel and deer I'm a big fan of the 308. Not as sexy as some of the others, but has been used in these capacities with success for years. Bullet options will be nearly infinite and you'll have a long barrel life. With your longer action, you'll be able to seat the bullets a long way out and get even more out of the round.

270AI does sound intriguing but the 280AI just has it beat in so many ways. 280AI available in factory rounds, 270AI not. Granted the .277 bullets will show up for reloading but some good .284 bullets are already here and more are coming. I love the 270 and the 260. My 280 is limited to the 7mm Mag which also fits in where I like it.

Having plenty of choices is the beauty of it all. I originally was going to build a .280 AI but opted for the .270 AI instead primarily for the 165/175 Matrix VLDs and 170 Bergers. Most AI owners will roll their own to take advantage of their builds. "I" am OK with where .270 AI's non-SAAMI status and popularity, it's one of the things that appealed to me during the build. There's only a handful of .270 AI owners on this site and just the way I like it. :D

Cheers!

.280 AI— Just buy Nosler brass and load. No fire forming and wasting 200 round down the tube over the life time of the barrel. But that's me I found out I just like to load it up and shoot it. Easy brass work to be done

Question/options first, justification below.

.270 Win with a 1-8" twist
.270 Sherman
Both of these let me stick with the do-all Jack O'Connor caliber.

6.5-284
6.5 Sherman
More velocity, more bullet options, maybe lose some elk capability?

.280 Ackley
Can share ammo with my dad.

Other?

My Savage .270 Win has become a project gun. 25% because I want a bit better long range capability than the factory 22" sporter barrel, 75% because I like to tinker for the sake of tinkering. So know that a lot of my motivation is "because I can". Hell, setbacks in "upgrading" this gun have forced me to borrow my dad's .280 for my first elk hunt in two weeks.
I think the ability to share ammo with your Dad pretty much seals the deal. 280AI is a fine cartridge as are the others. But you'd decrease the chances of a blowing up a rifle by using the same cartridge as your Dad. The 280AI dies can be had for 88 bucks, really good bullet selection, and excellent ballistics. I'd go 280 AI.

OConnor said that if the 280 had been available when he started hunting, he would have chosen it over his beloved 270.....And a 280AI is even better! But be careful about feeding. The AI can sometimes be very tricky to feed from a magazine.

I've asked the same question you are asking. I don't like the expensive dies and fireform barrel-wear associated with most wildcat cartridges. The 280ai has become a factory option with reasonably priced dies brass and ammo. It would be a clear winner hear. Unless you went with a 27-280ai instead of a 270ai or Sherman. All you would need to do is get 280ai bushing dies and a smaller bushing. It would even give you a little more capacity over the 270ai.

Another 270 win barrel.
Put the best 270 win barrel you can get on it and don't look back. Ignore all the marketing and the latest trend. 270 win is as good as any and better than most for long range , flat shooting capability.
