I take 50% of my coyotes over bait piles, and about 50% calling. I am able to obtain road killed deer which i begin getting in November,i chain them to trees on my property and have two shooting stations,75 yards, and 100 yards. Can't get shots any farther due to heavy timber works fantastic, the colder and snowier it gets the more action you get,not hard to take 40 a year more or less.Coyotes work the piles day and night. If you can't get road kills hook up with a deer processor they'll be happy to give you whole skeleton de-boned for free, they work equally as well.

Late November ,last supper,we get about 100 road kills in our 26 square mile jurisdiction encompassing two major interstates,a waste of good meat.

I need to start doing this. Usually just shoot coyotes when I see them but a targeted approach would be more efficient.
Amen brother, baiting has doubled my take been doing it since I've been working the interstates,if the bait is not re-barred to ground or chained they will drag a whole deer out of the area or at least out of sight, amazing.

How do you hunt them over the bait? simply put new bait out and wait?

Or are you putting the bait out then calling over it?

Or do you put some out and then a few days later call in that spot?

I have used the deer remains after processing to try and bait coyotes, but wasn't sure which method works best? I don't have the time to sit and wait all day for a coyote to find the bait. I was putting a little out each day to keep them coming back, then try and call them.

I sometimes call over bait only when weather is severe, baiting for me starts end of November till end of April,no shortage of roadkills.I always have two stations,i can't wait at piles because as you mentioned no time, however when snow gets deep and weather gets cold ,i try and check the piles regularly, when not working,or at night if i stay up late,Coyote light is a big asset. Coyotes will come in anytime of day usually at daybreak,or mid day and nightime when weather is severe. Now bear in mind i'm fortunate to live on the cusp of 22000 acres where coyotes are plentiful, and can shoot from the comfort of my spare room, when one is spotted. It's easy to shoot two a week or more, varies, last year in four days shot one a day same spot. Will post some pictures but don't want to wear out my welcome with too many pictures. Also my shooting stations are 75,70,and sometimes 100 yards but only when i can cross the river on my atv. I hope this helps. Not exactly long range shooting but a dead yote is just as dead at 75 yards as one i nailed at 500yds.

I do the exact same thing. I've been doing it since I was a teenager. It was one of the few brainstorms that I had at that age that paid off. Tying off the deer is very important. I just use bailer twine. I could not count how many Ive killed over a dead deer. Once they find the deer they stay pretty close to it. When it's cold out they'll visit periodically throughout the day until it's gone. Bobcats will also visit it.

I think this is a awesome thread I know nothing about yote hunting as I live in Mississippi, I know we have them but have never hunted them so keep posting pics and telling me more info on the HOW TOO'S cause I want to learn from people like you.

Have you ever left anything untied to see where they drag it to?

They just keeping pulling on it till you can't see it from your blind. It's hard to shoot what you can't see. At my place it just keeps ending up further and further down the crick. It's not like they do it on purpose. Tying it up just keeps it stationary.

I had a cow get immobilized while calving. This is where their nerve that functions their hind quarters gets pinched by the fetus passing through the birth canal. As the calf was being born the coyotes ate on it killing it. The cow in distress prolapsed and thus her uterus was exposed and coyotes chewed on it as well. Thus the cow had to be put out of her misery.

I figured why allow her to die in vain?

I chose a location in an open field and set her up. Placed a Target right beside her and sighted in dead on there. It paced off 349 paces.

Over the next few weeks I shot 13 coyotes off that bait. It was winter time with bare frozen ground so the rodent prospects were poor and the coyotes were coming by the gross during daylight hours.

I situated the bait such that I could access my shooting position without being detected.

Sounds like you're on to something good,i've been baiting for some time,it sure as heck ups your take of coyotes ,cold ,and snow equals coyote activity 24/7 lucky to have a spare room where when able can sit in warmth and take em out.I'm stocking up on deboned deer carcasses from the deer processor this week so i'm ready.People have been snatching up roadkill more than usual this year, however i'm okay.
