Im wanting a rifle for target, but something I can shoot all day. Something capable of 1 mile @ 1000 above sea level... What are some other options... What about a 270 with these new long bullets? Just looking for other ideas to research...

Either one will get you to a mile. Run a 180 eld-m, 183 smk, 195 berger, or a 197 smk. Any of those should get you to a mile. I run the 180 eld in my 7mm mag at 2959 and according to my drops it will stay supersonic past a mile at my elevation which is 1000-1600 ft depending where I'm at.

Consider a 6.5-06. it will duplicate PRC ballistics at a fraction of the price. Lots of inexpensive 25-06 & 30-06 new & once fired brass for reloading. Look at the ballistics of a 6.5-284 or PRC & you will see exactly what a 6.5-06 can do. Slick easy feeding & reasonable recoil.

6.5 SAUM, 6.5SS, 6.5 WSM, .264WM, 7SAUM, 7SS, 7 S MAX, 7 WSM, 7RM, .300SAUM, .300 SS, .300WSM, .300WM.
Use a 1:7.5" on any of the 6.5mm for 131/137 Hammer, 150 SMK or 156 Berger
Use a 1:8" on any of the 7mm for 180-197s
Use a 1:9" on any of the .308" for 200-230s.

For a 'fun shoot' the budget figures are close. If he is interested in competition, more $$ required. Again if it is just for fun, a Savage target model 308, with leupold scope would be a a great start and in budget. Probably not going to far in COMPETION long range without reloading, so that is a factor. one doesn't just 'jump' into 500 yard shooting...he should be starting at 200 yards as 'long range'.

One issue with the 270 (depending on budget) is most factory rifles aren't going to have the twist rate for those new longer bullets. Lots of options to get you there, all depends on what you're willing to spend, what you want, and what your "all day" recoil tolerance is.
