I have a Sako 270 WSM with a 23 inch barrel and want to shoot the Hornady145 ELDX. I tried them to see how they shoot and got a surprise when my first load put 3 shots under half an inch. I then tried a half grain more of the Retumbo and got a half inch group. These loads are the best this rifle has shot for me. A half grain more and the group went over an inch. My thought then was load up the middle load hoping it would reach over 3100fps. Chrono results showed only 3020 a little disappointing. The load is 68.5 grains of Retumbo behind the 145ELDX. Is there another powder that will give better velocity or should I be happy with what I have got. I know all rifles are different but some powders do perfom better in certain cartridges. What are others using I guess is what I am asking.

I've got a 24" W70 chambered in 270wsm and I'm shooting the 145gn ELDX on a nice accuracy node at about 3140. Using IMR 7977.

That was where I was hoping to get for velocity. I have some 7977 maybe I should give it a go.

It's probably worth it, I've been really impressed with 7977 in the 270wsm, really good and consistent velocity and good accuracy in my barrel.

I'm getting 3140 with an es of 3 sd of 1 with the 140 game changer in the 270 win with 62.2 RL26. I'd look at that Rl23 and 4955 as well in the wsm for at least that much speed. I ran a ladder with the 145's and I had a flat spot in that same velocity window. I saw a shiny spot at 3178 in fed brass and 3199 in Win brass. This was in that same basic weight ladder of powder.
You may do very well if it will get to pressure with Rl33 or 8133 as well as N565 or 570 in the WSM. Rl33 seems to like little/no jump to shoot well in my very very limited experience using it.

Thank you for that info Capt RB I would like to find some RL 26 to try. Other powders I have on hand are RL 22, RL 25, H1000, IMR 7828 and N570. All of these I hoped would give good velocity. I am going to try 69.0 grns of Retumbo with the bullet seated .005 deeper. Seating closer to the rifling was worse so maybe deeper will improve more. According to QL 68.5 grns of Retumbo should have only produced around 2925 and I got 3020. Not sure if all powders will be faster then predidicted but hoping so.
