What’s happening to LRH?

I agree with the op this site is not the same as when I started reading back in 2009-2010. you don't hear from very few of the pioneers in the sport any more.
in all honestly when was the last tread in the ELR forum that was about true ELR hunting or shooting
it is still one of the better sites out there but definitely not what it use to be

I think we are seeing a new generation of shooters who do not yet have the skills to shoot LR/ELR, but they are hungry to learn, love to read and hear about those who have mastered, if there is such a thing, the art, and want to have a place to voice their questions to knowledge people in the sport.

The change kinda' reminds me of reading 50 years of shooting and gun magazines that, over time, seem to rewrite articles on loading the 30-06, 357, 7RM, 300Wm, 223, etc, etc. Once you have learned it, you kinda' go, "what tha' he%%". Then you remember there are new eyes reading these articles for the first time and trying to learn the game. They thirst for knowledge that many of us learned decades ago.

Think of the school teacher who has to teach the same stuff year, after year, after year, but it is always to a new class who do not know.

I guess that is a sign of success in what was few is becoming many desiring to learn and becoming the next 1,000 yard or mile shooter/hunter. YMMV

Isn't this the law of unintended consequences? What stays the same?? Let me raise my hand and be first to admit I'm guilty. I just posted about reloader 26 replacement for my .280 AI. I knew I had read others using different powders. L.Sherm and Lancetkenyon posted to my thread within a day. (and others) Now I'll tip my cap to these gentlemen.

This is why I am on here... Men still act like they used to here.

I'll read all you post on reading wind. Send it lol!

I am not one of the greats, and my longest shot to date many on this forum would probably laugh at. However, I read FAR more than I post. I am a dedicated archery hunter and have taken A LOT of big whitetails and Black bears with my bow. I find firearms, reloading, accuracy, long range shooting and equipment extremely interesting.

I post questions when I have them whether it is about bullets or whatever, as that is what a forum is about. In today's world I can buy long range equipment and shoot long range. However, to do it successfully takes knowledge and proper practice.

I would like to see more threads STARTED by accomplished shooters on this forum (to many to list and I don't want to miss one). This gives us "wannabes" goals and knowledge without them even knowing.

I love this place and read it as often as I possibly can.

I thank everyone on this forum that contributes respectful, honest and knowledge based information.

Have a great evening everyone! Happy shooting!

Steve

I wouldn't go so far as to say that load data for a .280AI isn't appropriate for this site, quite the contrary. The .280AI is a great platform for medium to LR. What I mean is the attitude (and tolerance) of guys saying things that are contrary to this site's intended purpose (or at least its name). There is also a section called General Discussion, where you can talk about other manly things like trucks and 4wheelers.:D Sometimes it reminds me of gun shows and how they used to be about guns, instead of the flea markets they've turned into. Tolerance may be the theme of our society, but I don't have to like it! And in 3 more years after I retire from the military, I don't have to be nice about it either...not that I really am now.
You guys make me sound like a grumpy old man!

Added: still the best site on the internet!

I was long range hunting loooooong before I came across this forum,,, I don't know what this forum was like back in its hay-day...

If a person chooses to ELRH,,, then post away,,, that is what Len had mentioned a few years ago...

So what is long range hunting,,, 200,,, 400,,, 600,,, 10000,,, 1700,,, and where does ELRH start...

The tail-end of the forums also says """shooting"""... That's the area that fits my shooting sports since my hunting distances are now limited these days...

Don't get me wrong nor right,,, I'm sure I can still lay out a nice shot on a critter,,, but I'd rather stay with-in my limits...

I still enjoy reaching out there on predators now that I have a custom cartridge that can do this...

It would be nice to have more information on the hunting stuff,,, that's the area I like to follow...

If a person knows the content of years gone by,,, why not re-vive it,,, I bet Len and the majority would like to follow along...

Cheers from the North

One thing I noticed ia that a lot or threads are opened on the wrong forum. Example someone asking about basic rifle start up and the post in on the Long Range Forum instead of the Basics and starting up forum. Someone asking about a powder performance also on the long range one instead of the reloading and vice versa.

I saw one about AR reloading also on the long range instead of the AR forum.

I also think that as we learn we should also share that knowledge with who ever needs it, pay it forward.

Just my $0.02

I've been on a few forums and it has really been quite refreshing interacting on this one because it's a welcoming environment. Not like a "safe space" to protect fragile egos or anything like that, but in general, there seems to be a preponderance of fairly reasonable guys here. Sure, once in a while things get goofy and I learned early on what flies and what doesn't. I think what you're seeing here is a "diversity" of new shooters or folks that are just interested in Long Range Shooting (which is kind of a relative term). Many of them (like me) left other more pretentious forums because the interaction was not productive and/or they got jilted. I think that many here romanticize about shooting 1,000 yards but probably never will. So what? if they are getting something positive out of it and it helps inform their "Long Range" objective, what's not to like?
I agree with others that the site has probably "evolved" more than anything else.

Also not to be a Puritan, but I think some of the rules around potty-mouth and the posting of inappropriate material are good too. In a way, it sets the forum apart and makes good sense. The more people that feel welcome on a shooting forum, the better. It reflects well on our sport and bodes well for the prospect that we'll be able to keep enjoying it.

The point you make on the language is right on, and trust me I have one really really dirty mouth but luckily my fingers translate to a more educated word every time. We have ladies that also visit this forum so to keep it family oriented is the right way to go.

Agreed. And I figure if I can clean up my dialogue from a position of anonymity behind a keyboard, it might also make sense to try doing it real life!
