What .30 cal to build on Proof Carbon Sendero 26” 1-9.4”

What do you want to do with the rifle? I was thinking if you want to shoot targets and make that $700 barrel last, go .308, but the only benefit of 308win is barrel life, other than that it is probably the most boring cartridge in the world. That said, I have a love affair with the 300 win mag that I just can't seem to get over. I sold my 300 win mag and built a 30 Nosler when it first came out, thinking it would out perform and replace my 300 win mag. It didn't take but a month and the 30 Nosler was for sale and I was wanting a new 300 win mag. I don't see any benefits to the 30 Nosler or the 300prc over the old classic.
 
Just pick your poison.
The 308 and any Lapua bolt face are disqualifiers for me.
300 wm and 30 nosler would be on my short list. You need powder capacity to push big bullets. Great brass and dies available for both. I think the 2 biggest areas to reduce weight are in the stock and scope.

I just mean that there aren't a lot of other cartridges that share that bolt face for future switchover to something else. Do you have to build on a LA to fit the 215s or was that just personal preference?
 
I prefer LA for rems. Tikka doesn't matter. The boltface for a wsm is the same for magnums, nosler, ultra, etc. You'll have plenty of options :)
Built my first edge from a 7mag.
 
If you are alerady shooting the 280ai with 168s I would look to be sending something significantly heavier at least the speeds you are getting with that. In other words don't waste the barrel building a 308. 308 won't do what your 280 already does or at least wont do it any better. If you want a 308 for practice get a decent factory gun and go play. Save the rifle components and smithing money for something special. Id say 300 RUM.

My 338 Edge 10.6 pounds as she sets .
300 gr Berger E.H at 2884 fps.
Remington action , Mcmillian Stock 30 " proof ,T-3 Terminator. Absolutely my favorite right now .

For lighter weight build I would lean towards 300 WSM.

For another class above I would do 30 Nosler or 300 PRC
