What is the most horsepower you can get in a S/A Accuracy International

Spent some time looking into this and would lean heavily towards the 260AI. The balance of BC, sectional density, and retained velocity/energy of the 140+ gr bullets, IMO, places it at, or near the took of the list for a SA/standard boldface platform.

Could you do a 6.5x284 in a sa. Or even a regular 284? Are those on a .473 bolt face?

You are on a good track. yes this 284win is a .473bf. I would go that way over a saw. Close enough to not matter on 99.9999% of shots you will take and easy to get components. Also the AI is almost a medium action. I think a 6.5/284 would work great.

6.5x284 and 284 are really long action cartridges. You would be giving up substantial case capacity and losing the performance gains they are capable of trying to fit them in a short action. I reload for a buddies 6.5x284 with the 140 berger elite hunters and COAL is 3.195" with .010" jump. If your willing to single feed then they may be the ticket.

I thought those were usually built on long actions. This is some great info guys, I really appreciate the help. Bringing up a lot of ideas I would have overlooked. I didn't really plan on this being a hunting rifle but its so crazy accurate and while its not a lightweight it's still within reason for most aplications. Those heavy 6.5 bullets are wicked, it's a tough call between those and the heavy 7's
I attached a pic of a group from today's load workup with the 6.5x47 lapua barrel. Bought the barrel used with 1200rds on it. Not a.bad group at 400yds for a $250 used barrel. 143 eldx and a pretty stout load of CFE223. Getting roughly 2775fps. Thats a 1" dot. 4 shots in that cluster and a flyer. Group was still nearly .5 moa including the flyer

Some great suggestions here. I d just say if you go 260AI or 7-07 AI be sure to throat rifle so you re looking at a 2.90+ OAL with a high BC bullet. Will maximize case capacity and keep Bullet out of case.

Many good options thrown out. Good Luck

@backyardsniper I went through the same thing as you. I built a .260 AI, it is the best all around. Get a 7 or 7.5 twist and load the 156 Berger for hunting, 153 a-tip or 150 sierra for targets. In my 29" I'm getting 2940 fps with the 156, well below max loading 2.950" OAL in my AICS mag. Stupid accurate. They are jumping .060" in a SAAMI throat with 1400 rounds down it, but don't seem to care about jump. I also talked with a guy that is sending the 156 @2725 fps from a 20" barrel as well, so that gives you an idea.

The only way I would look at anything else is if I was excluseively hunting elk, and even then maybe not. The only other consideration for hunting big game would be a 215 in a .308 or .308 AI. Loaded to fit in an AICS type mag is going to get you 2500-2600ish with a 26" tube. If you throat a .308 and load them at 3.100" or so, with 28" tubes you can get 2650-2700 at max with the right powder, pretty insane. In a 24 savage I have loaded up to 2580, best accuracy was 2525, seated to fit in an AICS mag using RL17. Wind drift isn't bad, about like factory loaded 6.5 creed performance but WAY more energy, but also with a trajectory arc like a rainbow. Better be nutz on with your range.

For any and all high bc bullet considerations, a 6.5x55 and anythingx284 is a long action only application. And also, you don't really gain anything with those over a .260 AI other than they won't fit in a short action, and you don't have to form brass.

If you want any more info on the .260 AI, from brass to powders to primers, p.m. me, I have done a lot of loading with mine.

I had the same dilemma and wound up with a 6.5 Addiction. It is a partial 6.5x55AI, but with a short throat. Ended up being ballistically very similar to a 260AI. I've been extremely pleased with the accuracy. I've been shooting 147M, with this barrel and jug of H4831 I'm at 2920. With RL 26 and 143X, I'm over 3000. This is from a 26" barrel.

But it's a cartridge for tinkering. I had to work with my magazines, and I had to open up my actions to not overlap the magazines in front

Thanks Cody. I'll give you a shout but sounds like that 260 AI is the way to go I've got the folding stock so I can run a bit longer barrel and fold the stock when its in my pack. That sounds like an absolute hammer
