Do you always lap your scope rings?

Do you always lap your scope rings? How about on shorter range only setups (under 300 yards)? What lapping tools do you use?

On the rings I use, the manufacturers say not to lap them, so i don't on any of my rifles.

Talley and Nightforce are the two ring/mount systems I use and both say not to lap so I don't.

I bed all mine anymore.

I don't.....but, probably should! I think this falls into the area of "it can't hurt"! memtb

I do as well and I run Bruce Talley rings only.

Rather than use a commercial bedding kit, I machined drill rod to the appropriate diameter (1" or 30mm or whatever) and use Clover lapping compound

I'm talking bedding with compound theres a difference.

I use the Burris Signature Z rings with the spherical inserts which obviate the need for lapping the rings.

Care to elaborate on that? I'm curious.

I don't. Quality rings don't require lapping from what I've read. If the allignment bars look good, I roll with it. In 20+ years, I've lapped rings once or twice. Lapping compound made a mess and proved to be more of a hassle than it was worth.
