270 Win ?

Completely agree with what was said by some here. The 270 does not get the love it should. I have used federal premium and Winchester and never had a kill run more three ten yards. That being said I am currently sighted in at sub 1/4 moa with CHEAP federal fusion ammo and have some HSM 130 gr hollow point Berger's waiting in the wings. I tried to hunt with a 300 win mag but lost too much meat. So don't be afraid of a good old standby.

sell the 6.5 get into reloading , load the 06 down with 150g or lighter bullets and you've outgunned them both , if the need arises for a bigger gun load some 210s or 220g in the 06

The .30-06 doesn't outgun either one with a 150gr bullet. Just because it's faster at the muzzle, doesn't mean it's any better past 200 yards.

Since we're all giving our opinions, I'll give a positive vote on the .270. I love mine and everyone that's shot is able to hit what they're aiming at. It's the only rifle I have with a name - Excalibre, since everyone can kill with it. The longest shot I've ever taken was with this rifle, 750 yards on a wounded prairie ghost (someone else wounded it, I just finished it off), 150gr Partition did a complete pass thru the lungs. I've also killed a wounded elk at 200 yds, again, a complete pass thru in the chest, getting ribs going & coming. However, I would never intentionally go elk hunting with a .270. Yes, it will kill them but you are both range limited and shot angle limited and I don't like limits like that. Same with the big bears, although it should be adequate for eastern black bears. Again, get close and be picky about the angle... Nosler 150 Partitions rule out of the .270!
Cheers,

I have sold off all the 30-06's and most of all the 308's I had all for the 270 Win's and 270 WSM's. I think the 6.5 Creed is a good target only cartridge.
bottom line.. the 270 win is a severally under rated round. It is very lethal at long range as the 284's. the 270's need more projectile development so they are even more lethal. I have used my 270's on varmints/Coyotes, Deer, Elk, and <300 # pigs.
I have 338 Wins, 300 Wins, and other rifle calibers for specialty purposes. my go to hunting rifles are all 270's.

Yeah, don't buy a .270, they just aren't accurate!

270 Win works, have seen results on elk, they go down, meat damage is low with the right bullet. Long range - good for prairie hunting prong horns too if you are going that route.

Wait and see if the newly selected Sig 6.8mm NGSAR will improve bullet options, maybe the market can stand some more. Watching 6.8mm/.270 to see what happens next.

Yes, that's what we here up here in the North. The 270 Winchester is no good for big game hunting Elk and Moose since the bullets are to small and their known to not be that accurate... Ha

No one uses them in the national match shooting since the world famous 308 Winchester has it beat hands down,,, how could a factory 270 Winchester compete at that level,,, shame on the manufactors for producing such a cartridge...

We have about 1 to 200 shooters in our club of 1600 members that wished they didn't own one,,, they sit at the bench or the prone slab with big Grins on their faces knowing darn well that the rest of us are looking down on them...

We can see right past this fake-look,,, just because they shoot 1/2 to 1" groups all day long doesn't mean a thing in our books,,, most of us tip our seeing glasses down on our noise and call them lady gun shooters,,, it helps put them in there place...

Yuppers my friend,,, fat chance that I'd own a 270 Winchester since I'm in the big league of 6.5 A-square better known as a 6.5/06,,, a real man's rifle... Those of us that shoot the 6.5 and 280's are waaaaay superior to the 270 dudes,,, or should I say dudds... LOL...

Let's hope that the 94 year trend comes to an end so the rest of us can finally get a good nights sleep...

The 270 Winchester is way out dated as other cartridges out perform it in every way,,, the small train engine in the yard that won't fly up in our parts...

PS: We heard roumers up here that someone is thinking about necking the 270 Winchester cartridge up to 30 caliber,,, I bet they might name it the 30/270 or something wouldn't it neat if they called it the 30/270 Creedmoor... Ha

Nice tongue in cheek post Don. I liked it!

Like any cartridge, there are people that love it and people that'll hate it. That's fine. But a cartridge doesn't last as long as the .270 Win and gain as much popularity over 90+ years if it doesn't perform. It just seems to strike that magical balance between power and recoil that most people can appreciate.

If a guy wants to poke targets at long range, the 6.5CM is your huckleberry. Between a .30-06 and a .270 Win, there sure aren't a lot of hairs to be split between the two as they are so close in 'real world' results. I just don't see why a person couldn't own all three and be happy. As the candy bar commercial used to say, "Sometimes you feel like a nut; sometimes you don't."

Grab the gun out of the safe that feels most 'right' for that day. For me, most of the time that's one of my .270 Wins. But danged if I don't love my .25-06, too. And my .308 Win. And my .338 WM. Or that .243 Win. Or the .338 Fed. That .300BLK is the ticket for close in hogs at night. The 6.8 SPC II does good work, too, though. So many guns to use and enjoy!

My first gun I bought after college was a new Ruger 30-06 which I loved but as I got older the less recoil of the 270 won me over. My Barret Fieldcraft 270 is my favorite gun, it shoots Barnes 130 gr lead free in tiny groups for states I hunt that require lead free but also shots Bergers 150 gr hunting VLD well and at 3045 fps. The 150 gr VLD is flat shooting and carrys 1615 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards is more than I need out of a elk / moose rifle.

I've shot 1000 yards with my Striker handgun in .270 with 130gr nosler ballistic tip no problem also used 140 gr as well.
You can take deer, black bear.and elk with a 270win no problem if you put one in the boiler room. Imo it's a great round. That's why it's been around so long.

Actually, It kinda does. Especially when it starts with about a 300 fps advantage and has a surface area advantage of around 20%, and with good softnose btsp bullets it will open up to around 0.75 inches on the way through out to around 450 yards, dumping most of its energy into the animal. Since it significantly exceeds both the ,270 and the 6.5 Creed. in velocity to around 500 yards, that kinda does mean it is just a little better. But its a lot better with 180 grain bullets at 2800+ pr 165-168grain bullets at 2900+. But both rounds are going to be a little better than the 6.5 Creed at ranges inside 450 to 500 yards. The very high BC 6.5's don't start giving an advantage until around 550-600 yards. Oh, and most of the 150gr 6.5s aren't that high of a BC. Most of the 140-147gr range have BCs of around .48 to .57. That's not enough difference to overcome a 200fps advantage the .270 has, and the 300fps advantage the -06 has in the lower BC bullets inside 450 yards.

The question is, if you already have a 30-06 and a 6.5 creedmoor where does the 270 fit in. Rifle would be used for whitetail, woodchucks and coyote since we have all three in abundance on our farm. In a trade that i made i acquired a bunch of 270 ammunition and was thinking i now need to buy a rifle in 270, you know because that would be way smarter than just selling the ammo.
Are you suggesting that we buy guns because we need them?

I think it's kinda like golf. You get 14 clubs. I can hit a 9 iron as far as I hit an 8 iron if I hood it a bit. But I carry both. Same for 3 wood and driver. But I carry both. There ain't much you can do with a 60 degree wedge that you cannot do with a 56 degree wedge. But I carry both.
14 clubs. Lots of redundancy. I could probably play a round with 5 clubs and still play to my handicap. 14 clubs.

So to answer your query, why a 270 when you already have an 06 and a Credemore? Because. That's why.

If guns are like dresses. There ain't no such thing as to many or any rule that says you even have to have a use them.
