What bullet should I try in my 30-06

Shoot some Berger hunting VLD Bullets. 168 or 185 grain . Get them close to the lands and groves. They shoot better the closer they are. Just make sure they still fit in the magazine . Also make sure you have plenty of bullet in the case . So the bullet doesn't come out of case.

Check rings and bases the actions bolts and then the CROWN !! Load some 165 and 180 grain Nosler Ballistic tips over 4350 close to the lands , if it wont shoot a ballistic tip , send it back. 4064 has always served me well in the lighter bullets JMHO

if you're going if you're going to reload the 180 hot course as the previous poster put it they're perfectly decent
I've also been using the Sierra 180 grain Pro-hunter Spitzer in my 30-06's. At altitudes above about 8,000 ft, this bullet will shoot as flat as a 180 grain boat tail at sea level. My favorite loads are the Sierra or the Speer in 180 grain and 55 grains of IMR 4350, and Remington 9 1/2 primers. Remington brass or Winchester brass works good for these loads, along with Lake City brass.

though not a fan of Sierra bullets, the above poster is correct. You've only got to bang into a 12"+ window at 400 and under.

Every gun is different, but I have found that bullet seating depth has more to do with accuracy than anything else I have tried. Experiment with different depths
Not found this to be true with the Hammer bullets I've used, just pick a seating depth to fit your needs and run the powder charges.

Edited: I keep preaching these bullets for a reason. I had the same problem of bad groups with the .338 RUM mentioned earlier. After re-barreling it shot unacceptable groups, well over 1". The Hammers with the first starting load shot well under 1" and maintained that throughout. This is after I had tried literally hundreds of combos of over a half dozen bullets, half dozen powders, seating depths, primers, etc.

Sorry 180 gr flat base hornady interlock.

My load
Winchester brass
57 gr h4350
2825 +\~ FPS
Hornady 180 gr flat base interlock
20 ths off lands
Federal 210 primers
Have .002 th of bullet pinch
Gun has 1:10 twist with 24 inch barrel 4 groove factor gun.

Shot a lot of different rounds from 150 to 200
Gr. For what ever reason the guns I've shot like the 180 grain bullet and the flat base with the 1:10. With the design of the interlock they just shoot good. Tried everything from Sierra to Nosler but the Hornady held tight out to 400 yards. Good killing bullet with nice expansion. Very effective on whitetail and mule deer. Should work nice on elk.
My everyday carry gun for hunting out to 400 yards.

The 150s, 165s and 180s shot sub-MOA in my stock 700 BDL .30-06.
2-mule deer, one 5-pt. bull elk dropped (all within 200-yards).

Hammer 166... Initial cost is somewhat offset by ease of development. Here is the first five out of the 06, each is a one grain increment, not too finicky. 4350 and enjoyView attachment 149641

Mr MTHEAD , how far off the L&G's did you seat the Hammer166 when you started your load development ? I have always used Barnes and they are seating depth sensitive . The Hammers are suppose to be less sensitive to seating depth but have not tried them as yet . Thanks in advance , Floyd

Hey guys I've got a bergera b14 Hunter in 30-06 that is super finicky with ammo. I've tried 165 gmx, 165 interlocks, 180 ballistic tips, 178 eldx. Tried them with imr 4350, h4350 and the heavy two with h-4831sc. Also tried rl16. Anyways the only bullet I've been a able to get to shoot was a 190 gr nosler custom competition with h4831sc. It shoots around .7 moa. It's not a hunting bullet but my wife shot her black bear and deer with it last year and it killed them both very well. Both shots were around 250 yards. Anyways its looking like I'm going to be borrowing her rifle for an up coming elk hunt I've got. I was really wanting to use a bullet I'd have more confidence. Are there any other bullets that you guys know of that I should try? Maybe something similar? Would an accubond be worth a shot? I was hoping the 180 ballistic tips would be build close to them but they didn't shoot well. All these other bullets are around 1.5-2" at 100 yards. Should I just go hunt elk with these target bullets?
My sons Bergara does very nicely with Sierra Game Kings and Speer Grand Slams. It does like any Berger or Nosler bullets.

Joe I just looked it up and I would send it back to the factory and I would have them print Target for you and give you a load to use, you pay that much money for a rifle you deserve more!

I use Barnes 168 gr TTSX over a max charge of IMR 4350 in my 30-06 with outstanding accuracy and performance. I keep them at .040 off the lands. It always holds less than 1 MOA.

I would start with the 200gr. Partition, which is what I use in my Savage -06 as a back up for my .338 WM. I believe a healthy dose of IMR4831 is what I'm using but I'd have go down & dig out the notes to be certain. If the 200 won't shoot, try a 180 Partition. If that doesn't work either, it's time for a new barrel or new rifle!
Cheers,

nosler partitions is a great bullet. shot them for 25 years but I just found the hornady easier at least for ME to get more accurate especially when I got around 300-350 yards. I have used the 180 gr interlock for half doze 30-06 over the past 20 years and they have worked great for whitetail size animals at the rated speed the 06 pushes the bullet. Their is plenty of bullets that work great for the 30-06 but for ME and shooting out to 400 yards at whitetail size animals 300 pounds and less these bullets expand a lot and still retain a lot of lead driving through the animals. With that being said, would I use a partition again, you bet. Why don't I use a partition now, hornady shot better for me in my guns.
