A friend showed me a Savage 110 Desert Tactical and I was really impressed with all of the features that they come with for the price.
I ended up getting it in a 6mm Creed. for my purposes and so far it has proven to be an excellent out of the box factory rifle capable of keeping up with many of the custom made Rifles.

Thanks everyone for posts. I've been reading up on how to smooth out the bolt so that helps out. Now I'm reading up on bottom bolt release vs top bolt release. Looks like there's longer COAL in some of the ACIS style mags for top release. Also better aftermarket stock selection. Any thoughts about that? The reason why it matters to me is I'll be using the 215gr Berger in 300 WM or 180-195 gr in the 7mm RM or 280 AI. This would be my do all rifle with a priority on being a LR elk rifle.

The actions come in blind mag stagger feed or dbm metal style with center feed. The DBM style action has more room in the action cut out. I have taken many older blind mag actions and opened them up for use with aics mags. In fact, the 300 PRC I had to use a 338 mag and cdi bottom metal. For a standard 300 or 7mm I doubt any of that will matter. You can get AICS 300 WM in 3.715 or 3.55 inches.

I have two savages. One is a 110ba stealth that is cut to a .338 lapua improved. The other is a semi custom rig done by Kevin rayhill. Both shoot very well.
The 300 win mag semi custom is as good as any custom I have. 1/10 twist was shooting the 215 Berger great. Just switched over to the 181 hammer hunters and it is simply amazing how well it shoots. You will be very happy with a savage in 300 win mag. And as you tastes change you can upgrade easily.

A couple years ago I built a .338-06 off an older Savage 110 "flat-back" that accounted for MANY deer and a couple coyotes.
Currently working with another Savage 110 that I put a Criterion (.280AI) barrel on and I love it. Hard to go wrong with the Savage 110 models in my opinion.
I have a savage 110 in long range in 6.5x284 and love it, extremely accurate

I have had several Savages in 10 and 110 models, all shot well out of the box. I have been using a 7Rm for hunting and target that is on its 3rd barrel. Never had a problem with any of them. Aics mags are great. 7RM and 300WM use the same bottom metal and mags. They are available in 3 lengths. I have 3.715 and 3.850, either will work on the 7RM and handle most bullets. The 3.850 will handle the 300 for most any bullet at long length. I did open up the bottom of my action for better feeding, but that is something you can do yourself easily. I now have the 7RM in a XLR chassis and have used bottom metal and mags in 3.715" length I would let go pretty cheap. You will not be disappointed in a Savage.

Another Savage 110 fan here. Just got my latest project back from the smith. A rebarrel using a Shilen match and a few small other things.

I'm going to take a second to complai... I mean offer a word of caution. I hate that they started putting the smooth barrel nut on them. I find it's better to buy one with a slotted barrel nut. I also hate that they came out with the Axis/Edge. I think they should have stuck with the Stevens 200 and 10/110. I loved having tons of available take off parts available. Now that stuff is much harder to find. Aftermarket is still there, but OEM not as much.

12/16 Update: Finally got my 110 to the range yesterday. I took Federal Fusion 130 grain (270 Win)to try out and it shot easily under 1 MOA at 100 yards. It was windy, so there was some horizontal stringing on some groups, but overall I'm thrilled to death. Next step is to chrono to see what the SD is. My precision rifle is the same recipe - Savage action, Shilen barrel, B&C stock aluminum bedded stock. I'm vary happy with the formula!

I use Cnc pugs and nuts and throw the stock stuff away

I've got a 110 Single shot in 300WM. It's a one holer at 200yds. It sports a Shaw barrel, EGW bedded rail, Vortex 6 - 24 x 50 MRAD, and a Hogue stock. Wouldn't trade it for the world.

I have 2 savage 110's, .270win. an 30-06
2 114's, .270win. an 30-06
a 111 rebarreled to 35 whelen
a 116 .300 win. mag.
All of them shot very well and function well, some are older pre accu-trigger models and some are accu-trigger models.

I also have 2 Savages, a mag fed 30-06 with a very rough barrel that still shoots under an inch that I bought strictly as a back up for my .338 WM... just in case. The other is a .243 with a synthetic stock & blind mag that has a difficult time hitting the earth! 3" (and worse!) at 100 with just about any bullet I've tried. I'm going to rebarrel it one of these days but still haven't decided if I'll keep it as a .243 or maybe go with 6mm Rem AI. Decisions, decisions!
Cheers,
crkckr

I've got a 110 in 30-06 and it outshoots any Ruger I've ever owned. Dime size groups at 100 yds. I wanted a rifle that didn't cost an arm and a leg and wouldn't bother me if it got scratched up and was affordable and accurate. The 110 fit the bill and I wouldn't hesitate buying another.
