Most common caliber

I don't think the 308 can hang with the 30-06 when your run 165, 175 or 180gr bullets. Also won a 300 Win MAG at Elk Foundation raffle and after shooting several hundred rounds sold it. I bought an 06 and ran 180's at 2825fbs using H4350 and my shoulder, ears and every part of me enjoyed shooting this rifle much better that the 300WM.
No it can, I run a barnes 175 lrx at 2900, using 52 grains of ww760, and 210m primers. Groups .128. This is a factory savage #10, with a 26" barrel.

Most popular? But you mentioned
Both prepper and long range hunting. 22lr for prepping and 308 for long range hunting would be my choices. The .223/556 may be the most popular at the moment but is not sufficient for big game at long ranges. My 2 cent!

So basically you are running 4 grains over published MAX load, get outa here!!!

Just came back from the VORTEX EXTREME long distance challenge. Probably 60%-80% were 6.5 CM. I was amazed!
My team mates nephew from 3rd group crushed that competition beating last years team by an hour. I wish I could have gone they used a 6.5 gas gun with a Vortex razor HD, after winning Vortex told both of them to keep the optics. Good win for 3rd group

I volunteer at the local public shooting range in northern Utah. For big game hunting here it seems that the venerable 30-06 and 308 are at the top with the 270 very near the top with the 223 as most popular but not for hunting. Many more cartridges today than 20 or 40 years ago but it. Not scientific, limited to Northern Utah for data. The fascinating part is the occasional 32 Winchester Special or other unusual case to make you realize many cartridges in use. Here is a link to Chuck Hawks view of cartridge popularity... interesting reading. https://chuckhawks.com/best_selling_rifle_cartridges.htm

Yes, no Mark's on cases, primers look good. Every Chamder is different, and savages have alot of factory throat. There barrels run fast, and accurate. I go by what the case tells me, not a commercial barrel that they use for sami spec. Most people dont use that slow of power in a 308.works for me!

Caliber? In center fire, 30. Hands down. Chambering? Dunno. There are millions of .30 WCF (30-30) rifles out there beginning with the 94 Winchester. And probably millions of bolt guns in .30-06 including all the military guns ('03, '03-A3 & 1917) and about every full sized bolt gun model every e everywhere has ever made. There were only commercial .308's to speak of, and plenty of them, but never the likes of the .30-06. But rest assured, .30 caliber, whether from a black gun in 7.62x47 or one of the belted firebreathers or anything in between, is so dominantly the most popular caliber as to make senseless fooling with anything else. Mark me for a senseless fool because I load and shoot in .22, 6mm, .30, .35 & .45, but the serious stuff I do, I do with a .30.e.

Based on one month US ammunition sales back in 2015. I imagine current data has changed a bit: Hard to find current data.

Top91.jpg

Federal's top sellers from 2014:

1. .223 Remington/5.56mm NATO
2. .308 Winchester/7.62x51mm NATO
3. .30-'06 Springfield
4. .30-30 Winchester
5. .270 Winchester
6. .243 Winchester
7. .300 Winchester Magnum
8. 7mm Remington Magnum
9. 7.62x39
10. .300 Winchester Short Magnum
11. .22-250 Remington

We've seen 6.5 Creedmoor's share increase 13xat AmmunitionToGo.com from 2015 to 2018. That's remarkable growth! 13 X 19 = 247 which would move the 6.5 Creedmoor up to 21st on that list.

Our historical sales data shows .308 ammo is incredibly consistent. Over the past five years, the caliber has moved up and down less than .1% as part of our product mix.

What's the difference between the "40 S&W" at number 6 and the "40 Cal" at number
12?

You are probably right. My FIL and his FIL hunted the west central PA mountains with the 300 Savage and the .35 Rem for a couple decades until they both got Remington 760 Gamemasters in .30-06 (probably the mid-70s). Guys seemed to love those pumps up there and they'd usually pump 'em dry at the deer running across the power line easments! Oh how they would roar in the woods!
I started hunting in S.E. Pennsylvania in the late 60's. If you didn't have a 760 carbine in 30.06 or 308 you looked out of place. Great times.

Throughout the years there have been so many popular chamberings.. the most abundant of which is 22 Long Rifle. most every one has a 22 LR in their collection.. maybe multiple. centerfire cartridges there have been many very popular, 30-06, 270 win, 308 win, 300 win mag and 7 mm rem mag. what is most effective is up for much debate. I am very adamant about not debating people on the effectiveness of any one caliber or cartridge. we all have out needs and wants. this dictates our choices.
My personal opinion of the most abundantly owned cartridge is the 7MM Rem Mag. I have seen enough idiots with that cartridge chambering in their hands while out hunting. I may not agree with it's effectiveness or it might be a wee bit overly damaging to the game you are about t use it on.. that does not matter.. the fact of the matter is that in the hunting realm the 7MM Rem Mag is the most abundant I have ever seen. in the realm of defensive carbines.. the 223/5.56 is the king of the bunch. in the handgun marksmanship and IDPA the 45 ACP rules the roost. in defensive realms the 9MM is the most abundantly used for carry daily and the most widely used in the law enforcement field.
however the most abundantly owned throughout the USA is the 22 LR.
Very well said

Yup, similar to post #83, 6 out of 10 are .308 and .308 wins again. LOL

The only one that surprises me is number 9, the 7.62x39 and I guess it shouldn'y.
