so as hunting season approaches. I was sorting all my gear and I grabbed my pelican case and I need to order a new foam piece. upon my searching, I was reading that some people pack the rifle in a soft case, only use two pieces of foam instead of three and put clothes around it. any thoughts on this? or should buy new foam and cut it out?

My buddy just ordered these, not certain on the quality, but affordable. This company has tons of options as far as what cases they offer foam for!

You could remove the center foam, soft case the rifle, and pack with clothes. Definitely won't go anywhere. Also, boils down to looks and preference! The gun case is a great place to hide some extra weight!

I appreciate the advice. I truly am tossing the idea around cause it would save on a check bag at the time of traveling. I could pack majority of clothing in the case and then the rest in carry on

Another positive with removing the foam and using a soft case is using the soft case once you arrive at the hunting grounds. It's a pain the *** loading the large case in the truck every time you go out to hunt. I like to have a nice soft case with me for this.

I removed my foam and always pack my close around the rifle. Usually socks, rolled underwear and rolled t-shirts. I've traveled from Florida to Wy and florida to CA multiple times without issues. TSA sure puts a hurting on the case and I've lost a lock or two but gun always comes out perfect.

absolutely that is a great idea.

I generally use the foam. But I also have a drag bag so on occasions I place my rifle and gear in the drag bag, and then put it in the pelican case. And place clothes and other soft gear around it.
