The pistol reference was just to show how energy makes a difference. I never said a bad shot would kill because of energy. A bad shot is a bad shot, period. But directly through the vitals, with a big boomer, and they will ALMOST always drop in their tracks. I never said anything is guaranteed, but if you can't understand low energy vs high energy, then I can't help you.
I double lunged a 100 lb doe at 15 yards with a Glock 29 and she ran a long *** way, even though the 200 grain XTP made a full pass through. But you think two holes is the best way to kill. Why didn't she drop instantly with the super magic pass through?
Yet a similar Doe at 386 yards, with a 180 Interlock from a .300 Win Mag, she dropped, dead before she hit the ground. Bullet was in the offside shoulder.
I'm not coming back to this thread, because I'm not being baited into an argument.
So the source falls into the "some guy on the internet" category.

I actually don't care about two holes, I care about a bullet that sheds enough weight in the core of an elk that it creates a major permenant hole in the vital causing a massive blood pressure crash and O2 shortage. I've got elk with enough energy through the chest that it popped the blood vessels around the stomach and she held her feet and made it a couple hundred yards, massive energy dump with a bonded bullet but little permenant wound channel. I've shot quite a few with a 223 and a bullet that frags and they wobble 20 yards and tip over. I used to fill whitetail deer from a cemetery with a 22lr, I would drill the tips so they broke up, deer would kick and run a few feet then while looking around til over from blood loss, quick, clean and quite, zero energy.

So for a moment can we appreciate the irony that the ballistic article Overkill posted as proof that fragmenting bullets are a gimmick was written by Nathan Foster who has extensive knowledge of the terminal ballistics on long range game and the only monolithic bullets he recommends for long range hunting are bullets which use a fragmenting to kill game such as the Lehigh and Cutting Edge bullets.
