For as long as I've been reloading (1974), H4831 has been THE powder for the 270 Winchester. The caliber is, by far, my favorite for deer and antelope. My standard load that I have used in three different rifles is 60g in a Winchester case. I've used Nosler Partitions, Accubonds, and the 130g Barnes TTSX. However, after looking over recent loading manuals, it appears as though my old standard is giving up a good deal of performance in the interest of habit and nostalgia. SO.....are there other 270 fans active in the Forum and have you found any loads with the newer powders that you are using?

RL-16 and RL-26 are NOW my only 2 powders I use for most calibers including .270. My 50+ year old Savage 110C with new barrel last year LOVES the Hornady 145 ELDX with RL-26. ES and SD is crazy, ~3,000 fps and accuracy < 0.5 MOA out of a wood stocked 50+ year old rifle orignal trigger I bought new! Which kind of gives away my age....

It's not easy to change ,grew up on imr 4350&imr4831 both were great, then almost 30 some yrs later tryed Reloader powders now Alliant instant success with RL/22 in all my 270s Speed & Accuracy ,haven't burnt one kernel of RL26 , to many Horders , you know who you are !!! But bac up three numbers and it works nicely . Endurons powders are very good but their to Proud of them ,meaning pricey .Winchester powders are good But they drop production way to soon & discontinue powders with wind changes . Rl/22 has been Steller in 25/06 ,243,30/06,7mag ,300wmag,300BEE,7STW , the SWEDS know powders and Rifles!!! Cheers

I wouldn't use re22 in a hunting rifle the temp variation is way too extreme to keep up with.

New(ish) member here, long-time lurker, but I can contribute a bit on this topic!

I'm wrapping up a round of load development on dead stock Tikka 270. I had been running RL22 for a while under 130g Accubonds. Ultimately excessive meat damage (over expansion at close range) on a couple deer/antelope pushed me to starting a new round of load development and bullet selection.

My bullet choices were 150 NP, and after some digging, emailed Steve and had some 133g Sledgehammers on the way.

Research lead me to picking up a pound of RL26 last fall and I was able to hunt down a 1 lber without much issue (little did I know!).

I started load build up this spring and RL 26 certainly delivered. In my velocity ladders with just the 150 NP my Tikka was able to max out at 3050 fps.

Before even going much further than the velocity ladder with the 150g NP I started seeing how impossible RL26 was getting to find and I knew if I worked up loads for both bullets I'd burn all of that 1lber of RL26 up in a hurry. So I picked up Quickload, calibrated to my setup and found that IMR 7828/ssc might get me close to RL26 and I had a 1 lber of 7828 already on hand.

Velocity ladders got me within 20-50 fps of RL26, which was good enough for me. My tikka maxed out just over 3k on the 150 NPs and right near 3150 with the 133 sledgehammers with 7828, which was a nice validation of what QL was indicated.

Ultimately the 133 Sledgehammers won out over the 150 NPs and I settled 60.6g of IMR 7828ssc pushing them out at 3120 fps.

Sierra 140gr SBT Gameking .270 Cal - 0.277in.
55.5gr H4831SC Powder
Federal 210 Match Large Rifle Primer
Nosler Brass - Case Length 2.540in
COAL: 3.30in
Muzzle velocity: 2,850 ft/sec

There is another node at 2950ft/sec for my tikka t3 but it needs 58.2 meg of powder. I don't need more speed as I sight it in 4in high at 100 yds and I'm good up to 350yds. That Sierra bullet is deadly.

Has anyone tried Superformance in a .270 yet ? Ha, I bought 9 lbs. of this stuff but so far I've only used it on my 6.5 Creedmoor. I've been reloading since 1971 and I'm aware that it's not the same powder used by Hornady in their ammo but the name given to this powder can be misleading. What I'm currently using is h4831 and it's okay but some of the newer powders can improve on what I'm getting .

It seems I am going to be the odd man out on this one. I have used any one of my 270 wins I have had in the past with loads similar to this current one. nearly 31 years
I use 110 grain TSX topping off 58.7 grains of H-4350, Norma, Hornady, or Nosler brass, with a magnum large rifle primer (Winchester or Federal), that is good out of 400 yards. my other great load is Win 760 or H-414 at 59.2 grains with the rest remaining the same. Any yardage after 400, I go to Berger 140 VLD hunting slugs with
H-4831 SSC 57.1 grains with the rest the same as my 110 grain slug loads. I should add, I have two-270 wins one is a Win 70 feather weight carbine. that one loves slower powders like H-4831SSC, Win 780 Supreme, and Win760/H-414 with lighter slugs. nothing over a 130 grain slug. the Tikka 695 loves anything from Barnes below 150 grain or Berger 130 to 150 grain.

I use 55.5 gr of 4350 with a 130 gr sierra boattail. Deadly on Millie's, have one shot killed many

8 lb on internet easy grab. Buy 2, 8lb good for a bit

I just started playing around with this new to me 22" Mod 700 Classic .270. So far, R26/160PT; N560/150PT; R23/150NBT and Hunter/110 TTSX have all been just amazing! :)
