Hey folks. I'm kicking around the idea of rebarreling my 788 and going with a 8 twist 24" tube. That should handle most of the bullets I'll likely use up to about 107, not sure on how heavy of a mono will work. The thing I don't care for is having to spend $140 on a trigger and waiting a couple months for a pre fit or a gunsmith install.

I see Ruger sells the American predator in 243 with AI mags and a 9" twist. Remington also makes a 783 varmint with a nice laminate stock and a 9" twist 26" barrel. Both of these have pretty good triggers for factory rifles.

I've also rolled around the thought of selling the 788 and getting a Bergara HMR in 6mm, but that means new dies.

Anyone have experience shooting heavies with a 1-9" twist? How heavy can you go with monos? Will they handle 107-110 grain slugs or is 105 tops?

My old remington 243 is a 9.25 twist and wouldn't stabilize the 105's +. It didn't even shoot the 100's as well as the 80-90gr of bullets. Personally if your looking for a new rifle, in the rpr they sell a 6mm creed with a 1:7.7 twist if recall and that would stabilize anything you want to shoot pretty much. Not to mention the shorter cases longer neck will be more friendly when the heavies are in mind. I don't believe ruger sells the 243 any more due to the 6mm creed in the line up. But in the first gen I'm pretty sure the 243 had a 1:7.7 or 1:8 twist if you would rather the 243

I just bought a Ruger American Predator in 6mm Creedmoor w/ 1:7.7 twist. I didn't get the version with the AI mags, just the standard rotary mag. It was over $100 cheaper then the DBM version. Used the money I saved and put it towards a Boyds stock. Nice upgrade over factory stock.

I'm on my 3rd barrel for 243. Go with a 1:7 and shoot 105-115gr bullets. You won't be disappointed. Taken mine out to a mile so far
1:7 28" criterion barrel

How are the new magazines? I bought an American Ranch ~4 years ago and thought they were garbage. Someone told me they've been improved.
I don't have experience with the old ones. It seems they'll work but they're obviously designed to keep the price point down. The rest of the rifle seems pretty decent, considering what i paid for it ($400).

Too me, the stock is the best place to cheap out. I always upgrade those at some point anyways.

I'll let you know tomorrow. We are taking my dads ruger American predator in .243 out to the range. We are shooting 107s.

If the heaviest bullet you gonna shoot is 107grn than just stick with a 1-9 twist. My girlfriends 243 Rem shoots 105 Berger's H4831sc hole in hole at 300 yards all day long. Now if you jump up to a 115 grn bullet then yes a 1-8 twist would be better.
