My Rem 700 FIRED on Bolt Closing!!

Hey wait, you're right! If I slam the bolt as hard as I can it does fire!

Are you saying that I should increase trigger pull weight?

You need more engagement. Also check spring tension. If a trigger gets dirty and you don't have spring tension the dirt can cause what you've experienced.
Honestly, I believe this is the same thing that happens with Remington triggers, which causes shooters to blame the trigger.

I've owned quite a few Remington 700's, 721's, 722's, 600's, & 660's since the sixties.

The only time I had experienced what you've described is with a rifle I bought on-line. The rifle had an after market trigger that was adjusted with poor seat engagement. That rifle's barreled action was glued into the stock.
Since then, I've never trusted anybody else's "trigger job".

You need to keep enclosed triggers clean and free of WD-40 or anything else that will clog up the mechanism.

I clean my triggers with carburetor cleaner. Any lubricant can attract dust. But WD-40 is the very worst thing you can do to a trigger.

The good ole ND. Don't chamber another live round til it's sorted out!
I'd consider it an accidental discharge... but now that he know's of the malfunction it could be considered negligent going forward. Hope it all gets ironed out quickly.

I agree with ltbullken. Take it to the best gunsmith in your town. This is a life or death failure. Pay whatever it takes to get the gun right. If that's another trigger and $350, that's nothing compared to having the gun go bang and hurting someone.

Had the SAME thing happen to a .308 Rem 660 (a 700 cheap-o, blind magazine carbine).
I was unloading the blind magazine so the cartridges would fall into the driver's seat of my car. BLEW A HOLE IN THE PASSENGER FLOOR BOARD UPON CLOSING THE BOLT!

I sold that rifle fast. Bought a .308 Browning lever action with a detachable magazine.

Go to the Trigger Tech website and look at the schematic. There is no sear or sear adjustment. The weight of pull is the only adjustment there is

hmm, unloading the rifle in the car huh? (or at least pointing into the car)--can't wait to see the responses on this one

I had that happen when I didn't put washers under hs precision bottom metal and installed it one time. Took me forever to find culprit, and still do not understand why it happened. I bedded the washers in with some epoxy. Problem never occurred again.
