One powder to rule them all (30-06)?

53-55 grains of Reloder 16 should do you well in the 168-180 weight range. I was using various 4350 powders, RL19, 4831SC, Superformance, etc. and have set them all to the side for this powder. It is my "one powder to rule them all"...in this regard at least.

Do not own a 30-06, I'm a magnum guy. I do handload for 4 different 30-06's however.
All 4 get the best results with different loads of either RE19 or RE22. Velocity is actually higher with RE19 and 180's over RE22.
Another powder that works well is H4831sc.
Although I would recommend RE19 as the best performing with 165/180gr bullets.

Cheers.

H4350 has been my go to powder for most 165gr-180gr loads. But RL16 is worth a look also. If going to the 150 class bullets H4895 has been my pick. RL22 has been a favorite for many, and recently I have had good success with Hunter in the 180gr bullets.

My 700 Remington likes both RL 22 & 26 with 180 grain bullets. With 165 grainers it's RL 22. This rifle just never shot 4350 very good for some reason.

But, Has the firing pen spring on this rifle been checked. The rifle is at least 54 years old. If the spring has weakened from sitting around cocked and just old age could be a problem for accuracy. Needs to be checked and maybe replaced.

I have worked on old rifles Win. mod 70 and 721,722 and 725 Rem. owner says the barrel is bad. Change the firing pen spring and it shoots as good or better than when new. Something to check before working up loads. Happy Shooting.

Haven't looked at any springs except the trigger return.

In the course of inspecting it and installing scope (had to remove a lyman 48 style factory option peep), we discovered the **** thing would fire when pointed up, when closing bolt or flipping off safety. This obviously put the "heebeee jeeebeees" in us...

Upon further inspection, somebody, sometime, removed the 2nd lock nut from the trigger return spring. The remaining nut was flush against the trigger, and thus the trigger engagement was effectively relying on gravity...

We're gonna fix that before proceeding with our diabolical master plan.

Which I'll reveal like any good evil genius does before being defeated...

"Mwaaa haaaaa..."
"...Lets make this rifle work OK, and hopefully murder any sort of ungulate in a legal and fair chase hunt, so you can honor its legacy..."

Another good powder mix is Suprform,,, it works with 150 to 180 gr boolitz.

A fellow on our local Web forum was having issues launching the longer boolitz out of his 1:11 twist rifle,,, so I gave him a hand full of both 168 HPBT and 178 ELD-X / M's to try...

Bingo,,, things are looking much better on paper with both of these bullets,,, the Hornady book rates them in the lower class of at """least""" or no less than 1:12,,, that is why I built my F Class barrel on a 1:10 1/4...

Yes,,, its nice to see the 1.50 and higher number on the spin rate chart,,, but again,,, it really depends on the rifle if it likes it or not...

Another reason I shoot the 180gr weigth boolitz and heavier is for critter Punch-Junk and I find that my over all 10 shoot strings bunch up tighter """over all"""...

Don't get me wrong, the 130's,,, 150,,, 165/8's are good hunting or target application work good,,, but I'm not a fan of them since I'm old school...

A few of us got schooled a few years ago as we battled the for top spot on the summer match... We we're grinning from ear to ear with our 185 Juggernauts,,, be dammed if a fellow didn't kick our @$$'es as his 200 grain'ers as they bucked the winds a fraction better. Ha...

At least we ended up chasing his shirt tails with 2nd and 3rd spot. LOL...

Getting schooled is good.
