I'm going to re-barrel my 300RUM and thought I had it all planned out. Than Gregg C's thread on left eye dominance got me thinking. The rifle is a right handed gun, that was given to me from my dad as a graduation present. When he bought the rifle he had forgot that I had started to shoot left handed because of my bad right eye. I was planning on just re-barreling it, but than started to contemplate that I should just find a left handed action to build it on because I'm left handed. Now I'm having a hard time deciding what to do.

As a gift from your dad, that's a no brainer. Retire it and start from scratch on your new one. After all, is it shot out now as is? Those keep sakes are one of a kind and one time only.
It's not shot out completely yet, but has some pitting about half inch from the end of the muzzle.
The keepsake and being lefty is what what got me thinking about this. I'm just having a hard time finding a lefty action. That's why I'm still thinking of using the gun.

Thanks

As I've been looking for an action, I've ran across two things. First there is a rumor that you can only use Remington actions that have a "U" stamped on for Ultra Mags. Second is there a weight difference between the stainless actions and carbon?

Thanks

My son had an ultra mag built on a Rem mag action. Feeding wasn't up to par, so we had the feed lips opened slightly and a Wyatt's extended box installed. Both done by the smith for $125. Feeds like a charm now.

Keepsakes are once in a lifetime. Retire it and start new. Finding a left handed action wasn't hard. In less than 10 minutes I found a Rem short action on Gunbroker and Curtis Custom will build you any of their actions in a left handed model.

Yes there are short actions out there, but find an ultra mag action. The left-handed ones have seemed to vanish. I don't have $1000+ to spend on a custom action.

I do all my builds on Weatherby Mark V's. I start by looking for the action outright. If I can't find one (usually don't) I buy a used rifle on the cheap. I disassemble it and sell the parts that can still be sold and used. This way you can recoup some of your money and spend it on your build. There's a lefty 300 rum on gunbroker for just shy of $800. This route has worked very well for me in the past. By selling the stock and barrel now your $800 donor is $500.

I've been looking for rifles or actions, just wasn't wanting to spend that much up front for an action if I didn't have too.

Thanks

I don't know what has happened, just seems the left-handed stuff has started to disappear. I guess if I see something lefty I want I'm just going to have to buy it than because it may not be around when I decide to buy it later. I know Remington was making left handed 300 RUMS in the SPS for a long time, so I always thought I had that option, and it looks like they have stopped now.
