I have been collecting parts for a .264 Win Mag and have ask for information on the build before. I am moving toward ordering a barrel. That barrel ill either be a 1-7.5, 1-7 or a gain twist in 1 in 8 to 1 in 7. My questions are if I go straight 1-7 twist am I going to have problems with damaging cup and core bullets? Also the reason for the 1-7 is of course 150 - 160 grain bullets but if I want to shoot a 130 or 140 is the 1-7 going to cause issues?

Thanks for any help you can give me
Dave

I put together a 1-7.5 twist with krieger 4 groove built on a ruger m77 for my father. It sends 147 eld-m's at 3240 fps and never had a single issue so far, around 100 rounds now. I'm about to do a load work up with 140 Berger Elite Hunters until the 156 Berger (the bullet we built this rifle for) comes out. I don't anticipate any problems.

Will the 1-7.5 be fast enough for the 156 Bergers at sea level?

Dave

Don't really know/care, I live at 6600 ft elevation and most of my hunting is 8000 ft+. I highly doubt I'll need more.

If I lived at sea level however, I would go with a 7 twist just to be safe.
One more question what length barrel did you use for your father's m77?

Dave, I too am building a .264 WM with Savage 111F LA and went 1:7" 26" 5R Sendero contour prefit barrel from X-caliber but have not put it all together yet. I will be starting with140s and eventually heavier. Like codyadams, I too do expect any problems. Which 160 are you planning on using?

Cody, thanks for the information.

Feenix, I was looking at the 160 Matrix if they get the import issues straightened out. It looks like it will work with less twist than the Berger but I would also like to try the heavier Mono bullets like the 137 Hamer's. They take a 1-7 twist. I know you can't have the ideal set up for everything from 130s to heavy mono bullets but I would like to be able to shoot the fast twist without giving up the 130 or 140 class cup and core bullets. I also want to be ready for the future when I think we will see lead bullets no longer legal. I think I am either going to go with a straight 1-7 or a 1 in 8 to 1 in 7 gain twist. From what I have seen here I think I will be ok.

Hey Ed, I've got plenty of extra barrel nuts if you need one brother, lol.:):)
Let us know how it turns out.

+1 on Matrix 's issue. Sounds like a good plan to me.

With the 264 Win mag you need at a minim a 26" barrel. I did not have my rifle built but got it in a real deal, long story. It has a 9" twist Shilen I think it is a #4 barrel 27 3/4" long. This is as long as the smith could get out of a 28" blank. I shoot 130 Accubonds at 3350 fps with Retumbo. It is a real deer smoking bean field rifle.

You need to cut at least 1 inch off the muzzle end of a blank. Some companies tell you to cut off 2. When lapping the muzzle can get a flair and airguages don't work well on the last inch. Your Smith should know this.
