I have a 6.5x55 tikka and am thinking of rebarrleing to 6.5-06. I've already ordered a new Proof 264 barrel.

Question. I've seen the 6.5-06 load out to 3.440 but the long action Magazine on the Tikka is around 3.30. What are you 6.5-06 guys loading the longer bullets to if you have a tikka. Or is the Tikka just not up to the maximum over all length of the 6.5-06?

I don't have one, but I think you will be very limited with the 6.5/06 in a Tikka as far as bullet selection.

Yeah tikkas are great but not with true LA cartridges.
I'd go 6.5x55 Ackley

Use the mountain tactical AICS bottom metal with AICS or accurate mags. I'm building a 6-06 on a tikka action this setup and can seat to 3.600 with accurate mags if needed. Only minor mods needed to make it work. There's a couple other bottom metal options out there but IIRC, the mountain tactical allowed the longest COAL.

It's what my Nephew wanted, its built on a C series 700 he had. It was his very first gun got when he was 14.

I've got the mountain tactical bottom metal but just factory mags. Do they just make the ine type of bottom metal? Looks like I'll get a couple AICS mags then!

Think of the sweede being the creedmore of the tikka world......one of the shermans might work too but you will have to open the bolt.
The very long lead on the tikka had me thinking of rechambering but it shoots as is so it will have to wait till i win the lottery

I load my 6.5/06 at 3.34 col with excellent results, dont know what your doing with it but if its strictly tgt go with 140 grn or so bullets, if you are hunting with it go 120 or 129 bullets. Only reason being if you look at ft lbs of energy down range you gain nothing with the 140 and your trajectory is much better with the lighter bullets, I personally think the best of both worlds is the 129 accubond pushed at 3000 or so. All of the 6.5/06 I've owned seem to shoot best with imr 4350. It's a dandy long range varmint gun, and is really good on deer at 600 to 700 yds

My 6.5/06 shoots the 143 gr. ELDx very well at around 2900 fps. It's an old Rem 721 and I can seat the bullets out as far as I want, but I don't need to because I found that it also shoots the Hornady 95 gr. V-Max at a screaming velocity and puts them all in the same hole at 200 yards. It's been designated as a coyote rig.
