Anyone have any first hand recommendations on an outfitter that has been good to use? Back pack/fly in hunt would be what I'm looking for. Currently looking at nanika lake outfitters, and lonesome dove but would like to get some recommendations to start making calls and talking to guides and the unsuccessful hunters to base my choice. Optimally looking at under 12k for the hunt not including flight tags etc. Looked at Bolen/Lewis but may be a little too pricey. Would like to stick with British Columbia in terms of location. But could be open to others. Any insight would be appreciated.

Well, I live in BC and hunt goats every year because they are abundant in my corner. I also worked for outfitters as a guide. I don't know prices these days but why not try Elk Valley Bighorn Outfitter- Sam Medcalf. These are horseback hunts, you will get an opportunity at a Billy. Spectacular country.

Most BC hunts for goats will be from horseback. I have hunted with Ceaser Lake twice and took a goat and caribou both times. A lot of hours on the back of a horse but worth the trophies. I am going back for a boat moose hunt this September. Highly recommend. They also hunt from Argo.

Jordan, I have several neighbors that are outfitters here in s.e. B.C. I asked one this week and your budget seems about right. Success is very high and usually the ones that don't connect on a Billy are those that are not fit enough and play out.
Weather is a factor too but I can see goats and sheep with a spotting scope from my place sometimes.

Peasleyhunts.com.

Been with Logan 3 times and going back with him next month for spring black bear. Won't find a better guide/outfitter.

GOABC will help you locate a hunt. Make sure you get references on the outfitter.
Not the silly online stuff, call and talk with former clients. Make sure the outfitter knows your limitations and a fancy camp is not the criteria.
If I ever get a chance to hunt in Asia for sheep, I would not leave a stone unturned.
Goat hunting can unnerve even experienced mountaineers.

Jordan,

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Silent Mountain Outfitters, located in Southeast BC . I hunted there for goats in October 2017. The owner, Tom, is a heck of a nice guy, and very honest.

It is NOT a fly in hunt. You can drive from either Cranbrook or Calgary. If you fly in to Cranbrook, they would likely give you a ride to save you the cost of a rental car.

They do some backpack hunting, or you might hunt from a cabin and do day hikes. I think it largely depends on the time of year you go.

The fly in hunts in BC will likely cost you an extra $1000 to $1800. Unless you really have your heart set on flying in, this type of hunt is a much better option IMO.

There is not a lot of resident pressure on mountain goats. I'm not sure why, but there just isn't. Most of the resident pressure seems to be for moose. This type of hunt is a lot cheaper, and a lot more flexible. Also, you won't lose any days because you weren't able to fly due to bad weather.

I think he is currently charging $10,500. When I went, he gave me a mule deer tag at no extra cost. I'm not sure if he is still doing that, but it was great knowing that you could still hunt once you got your goat.

My hunt was in mid October, and we got some really tough weather all week. We saw goats nearly every day, but everything was so socked in that we weren't able to glass up very high. I finally got a billy on the last day, but I'm sure it would have happened a lot sooner if we had good weather.

I hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Good luck,
Dennis

Dennis you are correct, but the outfitter probably will pick you up at the airport, l. I have no experience with Silent Mountain ( good review)as far as I know there are no fly in hunts in South Eastern BC. Northern BC is different altogether.
I have worked for Outfitters in this region pretty extensively, but not much recently.
Weather is determining and if the weather is good you will see plenty of goats , in BC you are expected to take a Billy...I thought I would add this info for any others that might be interested

Thank you for all the info guys. It's been great, Dennis I will he contacting you soon.

Jordan,

Happy to help anyway I can.

I flew in to Calgary and rented a car when I went. The drive through the area around Banff National Park is one of the prettiest places I've ever seen.

Tom, the outfitter, lives in the Cranbrook area, but I am not sure how far that is from the airport. They did pick up another hunter from the airport the week I was there.

Like Antonio said, things there are very weather dependent. Early in the season I'm sure the bugs can be really bad. Later in the season the goats have really long hair, and you probably won't have any issues with bugs, but you risk getting weathered out.

On the plus side, if you get good weather, there are no shortage of goats!
