270wsm with hammer bullets

I have a 270 wsm 26'' barrel 1-9 twist that i shoot the 165 matrix vlds love that combo. But i was thinking about reloading some hammer hunters 126 gr bullets for shorter range shots and was wondering if anyone has shot this combo and what powder you are using and the velocity? i load the 165 with retumbo.
 
With the 126 you're gonna want something a little quicker like H4350, RL17 or Magpro. You're gonna get 3350 to 3400 fps depending on powder charge. I'd start with 61 grains of RL 17 and see how she works. Keep in mind 17 is temp sensitive below 40 degrees so definitely want to check your velocities as you practice. Good luck.
 
I guess the op might want to specify what the goal is? If it's velocity with accuracy, I don't think you'll beat RL26
If it's accuracy and temp stability, it might be something like 4350?
 
Good point elkaholic. He did ask what people are using and for the 126, so for me 126 to 130 grain bullets, I've only used those 3 powders. I had great velocity with RL 26 for the 170's but the accuracy wasn't quite as good as Retumbo. But that was just for my rifle.

The only problem with RL26 is availability; same goes for N570. There's just some powders that seem to go through spells where they're the hottest thing going for a while and you just can't get them. Locally, Retumbo and Varget were like gold a while back. I sold off a couple kegs I had sitting around to finance half of a custom rifle build!
 
I will use the 126 gr hammer hunter for coyotes, deer,bear,elk, out to 4-500yards ish and the 165matrix for longer.. i was thinking rl26 but was not sure how that would do. I use to load the 110ttsx with rl17 and got 3550fps and still have room.
 
I was shooting the Barnes 130 gr. TTSX in a .270 WSM with a 22 inch short barrel. It was very handy and good out to about 600 yards for energy. It had the same performance as your 126 Hammer.
 
You will be running compressed loads with most powder slower than 4831. That being said slightly compressed rl 19 has worked well for velocity and accuracy. However if you have some rl 17 or 4350, try that first.

Do you carry the the 165's in your pocket just in case you have a shot over 500 yards??
 
The Barnes 129grn LRX is a good balanced option and useful at increased range over the TTSX. I use R26 with them.
