300 win mag fps increase

26" 5r Milspec is the rifle. 100 rounds through it
YEAH. Mine is ALMOST milspec. I added the tactical bolt handle and that little JP eliminator on the tube (Shoots like a ***** cat and can see my shots all day long) and a Timney Calvin elite trigger

set at 1#. Great minds think alot

I am loading 300 Win mag with 77.1 grains of H1000 @ 2870 FPS shooting a 200 Grain Berger Hybrid. It is grouping 5 shot groups at 110 yards .611" and 440 yards 2.5". I would like a little more velocity so what would be a powder to use? Also had my personal best Tuesday with 3 out of 4 hits at 900 yards on a 12" plate. Group of the hits was about 7.25". Longest previous best was 675 Yards. Still got a long way to go though.
I have been using H1000 with the 208 ELD running at 2950 with no pressure signs.

I'm shooting a 215 Berger with H4831sc 72.5gr @ 2870fps that was yesterday, shooting a 5 shot group @ 100yds , My personal best was less than a 1/2". Today will be another good day so I should take it out to 800yds and see what happens

I am using RL17 with a 208 A-max. .3" groups at 100 at 2920 but could push them faster if needed. 215 primers.

But if you have a good speed, and a great accuracy , leave it alone. I would rather shoot slow and hit the target every time than have a screamer and hit 1/2 the time.

Bacon, why did you settle on the charge weight your currently using? Did you start seeing pressure signs, flattened or cratered primers, ejector marks, heavy bolt lift, in your load development or is there still room to work up and catch the next node at a higher velocity that your looking for? I wouldn't trade accuracy for an extra bit of speed but if you can safely have both why not? Most of my best loads are near max and typically I find better ES and SD there due to better load density. Are you currently getting good ES and SD, I guess you are if the groups are holding up at range but I didn't see any mention of this. What brass and case capacity of H2O does your brass have? What COAL and how much jump are you running on your seating depth? How much neck tension? All these things and a whole lot more could effect the velocity your seeing with your current load and may give you room to gain some speed. I have a buddy who him and I have as close to identical 300 win mags as two guys could get, serials of actions are one number off, barrels are one serial # off, cut by the same smith with the same reamer on the same day and everything about our load is identical, he uses all my reloading equipment, same lot of bullets, primers and powder but we have different brass manufacturers and I'm able to run 1.3 grains less powder and match his velocity. Just food for thought.

Buster this is exactly like my gun and a friends. His brass is heavier so he uses less powder but we are both at 3000 fps with the 215. Other than that we load exactly the same. Both Brux Barrels and we used my reamer to build both guns.

As far as pressure signs go I worked up till I started seeing a nice ejector mark on my Norma Brass. Worked it back down to settle on the load it currently has. I think after reading all this I will just stay where I am at. Once my ranges get further and further out I will change load or change caliber lol. Thanks guys for all yall's help.

You do know with the speed that you are at and the bullet that you are using will do the job on an elk at 900 yards? That is if the shooter is up to that task. I'd just leave it where it's at and not even change....ever! Haha

And I'm not telling you to go shoot an elk at 900, just telling you that there is no need to change anything.

Extra fps gives you more confidence. If you are worried about missing at a distance where 100 fos makes a difference you are shooting too far at unknown distances. !! Still, speed kills . Prairie dogs are another matter!

Try some VV N570 powder if you can find it. This is 83 grains in Nosler brass and a 215 Berger. Velocity is 3040 with SD and ES in singe digits. I played a round with loads all the way up to 84 grains with different brass and primers, saw velocities to 3120 but had some pressure there. With SIG brass I had near the same velocities at 81 grains but slightly worse accuracy. My rilfe was chambered with a match reamer with a lot of freebore.

Bacon, sorry I lost track of this post the last few days. Another powder worth considering with the 200 gr. and below bullets is H4831 SC. I've had good results with it and the 180 Berger elite hunters. I like H-1000 for the 215-230 weight class.
